Socket A CPU upgrade, or not?

Thread Starter
I have an Emachine c1641 I got second hand for $50 almost a year ago. I'm using it as a 24/7 web and gaming server (whatever I feel like). You can access "live" server specs here if you wish.

I am considering upgrading the CPU to something faster. As I don't know much about AMD processors, I was hoping some of you could help me out! (It seems that Athlon-xp ~2400+ chips go for about $10-20 shipped on ebay--though I will hopefully be buying from the overclock.net community if I can.)

Is going from an Athlon-Xp 1600+ to an Athlon-Xp 2400+ worth it? Do you recommend another processor? (I don't have much money for it though!)

I upgrade from a Sempron 2800 to a Athlon 3200. Even after OCing the Athlon to 2.46ghz....I just didn't see that much of a difference.

But then again, if you can upgrade for just a few bucks...every little bit helps.

Nick

Being a 24/7 server, and an Emachine, I can't overclock.

Like he said...a stronger processor will make a marginal but yet a difference indeed...
Imagine if it were running at 2.2GHZ?
Go ahead and do that!!!

You might first find out what motherboard you have in the Emachine to see if the voltage requirements will work for you.
The newer xp processors use less voltage.

several programs will identify the mobo, prolly a ECS with limited bios features 9greyed out), then a used xp3200 would be the best bet.

It seems that Athlon-xp ~2400+ chips go for about $10-20 shipped on ebay
Lol, let me know when you find one between $10-20 shipped. I'm seeing $40-60. Skt A's are getting harder and harder to find, bringing high prices.

When I made the post, I saw an Athlon-xp 2400+, 30min to go, last bid was $10, plus whatever shipping was, from a legit-looking seller. Look at items sold recently. I had seen $40-60 for 2800+ or higher processors... Maybe I was mistaken?

Lemme look again.

I've been looking for a decent sktA for $20 or under for a few months now.Only ones I see in that range are Durons and like 1200+'s and lower. You might be able to find something cheaper though. just make sure you read feedback. One big Cpu seller on ebay has like 99% positive feedback, yet over 30% of his cpu's are DOA! I found out the hard way

Ah. Well I've never actually bought via ebay (for good reasons )
