Boot Time in Vista

Thread Starter
Well, when I had XP Pro about 2 weeks ago, my boot time was around 7 seconds with everything loaded on desktop by seven seconds from the touch of the power button. With Vista, my loading time is significantly longer at around 30 seconds. It feels really slow on startup for some reason. What are your guys' boot times? And is there any way to fix this slow boot time?

(Shutting down time is much faster but a little slower compared to XP still)

Do some tweaking, eliminate the services that you dont need, also clen up your startup.

Stock vs Stock xp and vista Vista takes like 20-30 seconds longer before even getting to desktop. At desktop basically everything is loaded.

Well, I haven't seen a "Welcome" screen on startup in a long time since I disabled a lot of stupid services that Vista Ultimate comes with.. But when loading, and it goes to that bland bootup screen with that one green bar, my Hard Drive is in FULL USE and it seems super slow. I've never seen that happen in XP, since the load up time was around 7 seconds from the push of the power button.. but now it is really slow..

I have the opposite boot speed, Vista is much faster for me.
This is the guide I followed for tweaking Vista, I'm down to 16-19% mem usage.

I hate to state the obvious but those who's systems load faster under Vista usually have pretty high spec systems. As stated, you can speed up your boot time by disableing any services and processes you don't need via MSCONFIG.

have you tried a good ole fashioned disk defrag? Vista ultimate on my laptop runs about the same as XP did. I wouldnt call it slower by any means. Course I'm running 64 bit also.

Did you use a third party defrag application?

I just started using one yes - Diskeeper. There are option in there to defrag the boot files as well, but Vista never ran that slow to begin with.
