What's so bad about the OCZ?

Thread Starter
Hey all
I was asking around here regarding which PSU to get, now.. Everyone referred me to the Corsair HX when I was enquiring about the OCZ GameXStream 600/700W. They said it was much better.

Now, the Corsair HX 620W prices have gone up ALOT (by around £15 in a few days ) ... so I have to reconsider the OCZ.

Some people were saying it didn't perform well under full load or something?

My upcoming rig will be something like this:
C2D E6600
Asus P5B-Deluxe
G.Skill HZ 2GB
8800GTS 640MB (overclocked to 661 / 2000)

I know that the OCZ 600W version will support the rig above -- but I'd get the 700W for futureproofing incase I decide to SLi, etc. Also, the 700W is considerably cheaper than the Corsair HX 620W.... also the 700W has a massive 56 Amps on the 12V ( 680 / 12 )...

So, the question is: What's so bad about the OCZ GameXStream PSU's? (from what I've heard anyway)... You're also welcome to tell me the good things

I THINK the 700w PSU had something called "power ripple" issues, but don't ask me to expoud upon it because I didn't understand it to begin with.

However, I've also read that it's been revised and no-longer is a real issue.

There are a lot of members here that trust their OCZ's; Mike, for example.

If I remember right they are just FSP psu's which are really reliable power supplies, iuts just that they did have a ripple that was noticable but they are still good psu's. I had a fsp 700w (probably the same thing) and it powered all my stuff for over a year with no problems.

What exactly does this "AC Ripple" mean?

I love my OCZ 700W. I don't know why people would say that the OCZ isn't a good PSU. That's simply incorrect. Get it, you won't be sorry

Ah, I see. So you get more ripple on that the higher you go. The system I specified shouldn't push more than around 500W at full load possible .. if that - so I doubt it should be a factor?

So basically, does ripple mean it can damage the components inside the PC?

Yeah pretty much. It won't kill it instantly, but it will definely shorten the lifespan of everything rapidly.
