SMP folding questions

Thread Starter
Hey there people.

Im testing out the SMP client on my machine and I have just succesfully set it up and i am folding.

However when i look to my CPU usage it only spikes up to around 30%, is this 30% on each core ? Also is there anything else I should know or tweak for best performance ?

Thanks.

No, that's both cores. See if anything here helps. I think he was having a similar problem.

umm.. maybe you should make sure ur wireless is off if not in use and make sure that you're getting a steady internet connection. SMP does not like to have its internet cut off. at all.. ever.

Well it seems to be ok now. it uses up to 70% when im doing something and when im not it spikes upwards so that seems fairly ok.

I dont think my internet connection will get in the way as once you have got the core you fold it. Internet is only used when uploading or recieiving a WU to my knowledge.

Actually Enterprise, SMP requires a network loopback. If your internet drops or is weak, it will pause or slow the folding. I had a faulty LAN connector on my P5WD2 that made it impossible to SMP fold as it would drop every 15 minutes or so and need to be manually reset. Also, my router is dying (POS D-Link), so my main system which is on wireless needs to be watched, as when the wireless drops, even though it immediately re-connects, the SMP is paused until I restart.

It's only using 70%? Did you configure it for 100% idle usage? I thought that was default setting, but might want to check.

Oh really. I didnt know that..well you learn something everyday eh. Well i didnt do any advanced config and left it all at default. Btw in general how long can an SMP WU take ?

I do one a day using the VMware/Linux/SMP. I puase it for a few hours a day for gaming.

And don't run it as a service... I've only found that to be a huge hassle and not working properly.
