bottle of vodka should do then lol.
most of the rubbing alcohol i see is 70%... most of the vodka you can buy will be 80 proof... or 40%... and for a 750ml bottle... i'd rather pay 1-2 dollars for rubbing alcohol, instead of 8 dollars for drinking alcohol...

You'll get poor contact so your temperatures will be high...the thermal paste fills all the tiny bumps and cracks in the CPU IHS/core and the HSF base

your temps will suck...

you need the thermal compound for BETTER performance...

I'm not sure about the cost effectiveness. But these two chemicals do a great job!

I second this...

I bought a big bottle at Wal-Mart for 1.99 and I also got some little sample bottles that I fill from the big bottle that I got at a dollar store..

I buy a large by huge box of Q-tips...

it usually takes me about 4 to 6 Q-tips to do the CPU and Heatsink...I soak 1 end of a Q-tip in the Goo-Gone and work over both surfaces then I use the other end and the 2nd Q-tip to clean up all the goo-gone/tim and use 2 more Q-tips to clean with 100% Alcohol I buy at the Paint Store...(1 gallon is 4.99)

I have tried other chemicals and have found most leave a residue behind that can hinder cooling (heat transfer) and I seem to get the best results this way...

Then it just applying the new TIM...it should be much removal work if you applied it right as the TIM should be so thin you can see thru it....

Thermal compound is designed to fill in microscopic gaps between the surface of the heatsink and the die.

Lapping would be used to smooth out these gaps, but even with lapping, small valleys and peaks on the surface exist.

As for cleaning off the thermal compound, I found alcohol and tissue paper to work very well. Just make sure you fold up the tissue paper (or use a dedicated cloth) so that it's not too thin.

I used 70% alcohol, and it worked just fine.

IMO, you don't need to spend money buying cleaners. To me, it's too much luxury.
