Problem with new hard drive

Thread Starter
Hi again! Well the hard drive that my grandpa gave me is not working. I tried to reformat the drive but i cant do it The hard drive is a sata Western Digital WD3200JD which has 320gb of space and a 8mb buffer. This drive was in a gateway computer that my grandpa had. The computer was struck by lightning, but the hard drive still works. He gave it to me and i installed it into my computer, hooked everything up fine, turned on the computer, entered into bios and it can see the drive. Then i stick my Windows XP cd into my cd drive and boot up but the only option i get is a recovery feature from gateway!!?? I dont have any more ideas. Please can anyone help me reformat this drive??!!

How was it struck by lightning? lol

Right-click "My Computer," on the left click on "Disk Management." Then right-click the drive and format it.

What he said. You could also download a program like DBAN to completely wipe the drive, and then try and reinstall. With the Gateway CD your only going to be able to restore it to the factory settings and stuff. Those CDs are really restrictive on what you can do with them.

DBAN: (it's free)

I'm assuming you are installing this harddrive on your PC and not your Grandpa's gateway?
