Why the nickel finish?

Does anyone have information as to why copper heatsinks are oftentimes given a nickel finish, especially at the area of contact? I'm looking for concrete information more than opinion. It just seems foolish if its just asthetics as we all get excited about copper anyway.

if you mean the part that makes contact with the processor it is done like that in order to have more surface touching the processor, meaning its going to absorb more heat ...the more contact it does, the better heat dissipation it has

Oxidation and or corrosion is the reason.

Most heatsinks are coated in .... something.... I thought it was aluminum, but maybe it is nickel. But that's not important lol.

I was wondering this too actually, because i lapped my other ihs today and remmebered that theres copper under there, why not just have a solid copper ihs, its better at transferring heat....

yeah thing is not all of the processors or HSF are made the same sometimes you get them with a concave base so it doesnt make full contact...then lapping comes to mind.

oxidation? what are you doing, pouring road salt over your hsf? Copper is a very slow oxidating metal (as apposed to iron) unless its given the right conditions which I doubt are in your computer case. There is something to be said for a smoother surface so that it will transfer heat better, but IMO it is mainly for appearance.

I think its ridiculous. The other copper parts in my mobo don't carrode or oxidize. As for more contact to the cpu...Ha?????? All I can come up with is that nickel is cheaper than copper but then you have an extra step in the manufacturing process.

I'm assuming... well I don't know what I assume, its just dumb!

It is oxidization. Leave your nice shiny copper block out for a few days... it will start to get dull looking.
