New guy, needs help with overclocking. P4 2.8ghz

Hi!

New into the overclocking, i've had this chip overclocked to 3.17 for a couple of months. Idle 31C, load 36C. I really can't afford a new computer and just saved up for a x1950PRO, but having severe bottlneck. I can't even run BF2 unless I have it set to medium-low settings.

So can you guys help me get a better clock?

Heres what I got going so far:

Visiontek X1950 Pro 256mb XGE (AGP)

Two 512mb sticks of PC3200 ram with coolers

Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000-G Motherboard

Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8ghz Socket 478

I have the stock Vcore, I can raise it to 3.21 but will get random reboots. Any more and I crash on boot. Any ideas?

just raise your vcore up 1 or 2 notches above what you cvurrently have it set to. that should fix the random reboots.

heres what you do. if you happen to boot up 3.3 and get random restarts, that means you dont have enough vcore. just up it a notch or 2. see if you get the restarts. if not, your stable. thats the jist of it. i think you could run 3.4 perfectly as long as you have good cooling. you may be able to go 3.6 stable. ive seen it happen with air, you just have to be careful. a lot of the overclock also depends on what bios you have. i updated my bios and it wouldnt let me get past 3.8, i went back to the old bios and i can still hit 4.0, 4.2, 4.4. quite fun actually, 4.4 is just a ***** to get to.

you increase fsb. if unstable up the vcore. pretty simple. just watch the temps

You can fill in your system specs in your "user CP" at the top of the page and people can help you more.

Are you paying attention to your ram as well? If you're trying to run at 1:1 then your ram is being overclocked as well and that could hold you back. Use a divider to underclock the ram and take it out of the picture while you find the max overclock on your processor.

Here is some more info I got from the BIOS menu.

CPU Host Frequency= 151
AGP/PCI/SRC= 66/33/100
Memory Frequenct= Auto (378mhz)
DIMM Overvoltage= Normal
AGP Overvoltage= Normal
CPU Voltage= Normal (1.3875v)

I'm gonna put it up to 3.3 and see if it will boot, if not then I will start messing with the Vcore.

Alright I got it to 3.4!

CPU Host Frequency= 163
CPU Voltage 1.5500v

CPU Tempature 38C Idle 44C load

Now here is where i'm confused.

There is a setting called "Memory Frequency" set to "Auto", under it it said that it was at 378mhz, I would crash on boot.

I then set Memory frequency to 2.0, and under it said it was at 324mhz, then I was able to boot. Is this the "underclock" you were asking for krimson?

Any downside to this "memory underclock"?

Thanks for all the help! Hope to push it even more soon.

I set the BIOS to sound the system speaker when I go over 60C, it would not boot into windows. Cleared the CMOS and no matter what it would not boot, I kept trying to make it boot on 3.4ghz, and just settled on the old settings at 3.17ghz and still no boot, eventualy I got this.

Award BootBlock BIOS v1.0
Scanning BIOS Image in Hard Drive
BIOS Auto-Recovering........................................ .............

It just keeps on showing dots. I left it on for about an hour and nothing has happened. Do I leave it on even longer or do I have to flash the BIOS or something?
