NTLDR Problem

Thread Starter
I know there is many threads with this problem but mine is kinda wierd. This is the story. The computer was working for a while until i tried to do a windows update. It made me restart then it looked like everything was in windows 98. I didn't like that so i tried doing a system restore and it came up with a message saying that something was preventing windows from accurately checking the lisence right after the welcome screen. This would not allow me to get into my desktop. So I put my hard drive in my brothers working computer as a slave and formatted it. There were no errors in the formatting process. So I put it back in my computer and I recieved the error message NTLDR is missing press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I have tried everything. I made sure the jumpers were right. I tried formatting it again. I unplugged everything from the motherboard and plugged it back in. Took the processor out, took the ram out, unplugged the IDE cables and plugged everything back in. It won't boot from the Windows XP CD either.

Is the BIOS detecting a hard drive is attached? Detecting the CD-Rom drive?

means that it can't find the right boot sequence. Go to Bios and specified the drive the computer to boot from.

1st boot = CDROM. Do you have your bios set to this?
when you say you reformatted it that means it's blank did you reinstall XP or windows 2000 whist it was in the other PC? NTLDR is the windows boot loader and normallylocated on the first sector of the first drive ( in this case perhaps the drive of your brothers PC. You can copy the files needed to boot from a working system but since you have reformatted the drive either run a repair from the windows CD or do a new install. If no bootable CD is detected it will boot from the next item specified in the BIOS normally the hard drive, floopy or other removable device.

I have set the CD-Rom as first in the boot sequence. I have tried only the CD-Rom. Jumpers were set correctly when i tried this also. I have tried booting from a removable device using the instructions on this site (http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm) for the usb device. And still am getting no results. Is it possible that the Hard drive or the motherboard could be bad? I tried another one and got the BOOT DISK FAILURE error.

I'm still not understanding what you are doing. first reset your CMOS jumper as per your motherboard instructions. Set the Bios to boot off the CD ROM with hard disk as the second device. I am assuming you now have a blank hard disk. install windows as new install. Is your CD and disk on the same eide port i.e connected to the same cable?

Are you certain that the IDE ribbon cable between the drives and the motherboard isn't damaged?

No they are on seperate IDE cables. The Hard drive is on the primary cable set as master. The CD-Rom is set as master on the secondary cable
