Deal: Buy an EVGA 8800 Ultra get a FREE EVGA 680i LT motherboard @ multiple e-tailers - Page 2

the ultra is a Rev1 G80 core with a .5V increase, the same thing can be done to the GTX, the reason the Ultra can oc maybe a few mhz faster is that .5V increase but any body thats gonna blow 500 on a card to oc, would already be ok with a voltmod anyway, kinda negates the Ultra

the G80 core without some serious voltage wont get higher, where talking a good 20% boost in voltage and some serious cooling to run at that voltage to break the 665 barrier

Pretty good deal though, but wish they would just lower the price on the Ultra by $200 instead.
Meh just buy 2 8800 GTX instead and wipe out the ultra. Because theres no way Nvidia would consider drop the price of an 8800 card.

Remember back in the day when buying an eVGA 7800 GT netted you a free eVGA Nfroce 4 SLI Mobo... good stuff. Nice to see that eVGA is doing something to make the Ultra a little easier to swallow... though I would have preferred just a price drop.

A price drop probably gets them in trouble with nVidia...

How so? I wouldnt think Nvidia would not care, as eVGA has already paid them for the GPU's. I would have liked to see a rebate or something, but meh. My cards are just one V-Mod away from ultra status which Ill do once I go water anyways.
Well... Price often has to do with the 'status' of a product. When eVGA drops price, others are forced to follow, and the overall price for the card will drop. This erodes the 'status' of the Ultra being 'so much better' than the GTX

Thus, yes, nVidia does care for what price these cards sell for.

You rarely see stark differences in price for the same card, and price differences can often be explained by higher clock speeds or whatnot (like 'Superclocked' cards).

Its a sad day when the price of a card says more about a card then the actual performance of said card in benchmarks/real world apps. That being said, I understand where you are coming from, but at the same time, don't really think a $100 MFR would make anybody think any less of the card, just a little bit more of the company. But thats neither here nor there. To get back on topic, nice card, nice motherboard, nice deal.
