You're going to need either a core 2 or an x2 if you wanna use that gtx to anything near its potential. 3 gigs of ddr wont give much of a boost if you've got that cpu holding you back

Of course, you could also look at it this way:
You've probably got the best 3dmark score of anyone with a 3000+

Yea, the cheapest way to go is probably an X2. Sure, C2D are faster, but you'll have to upgrade your ram and mobo too. Unless you can sell your current stuff for a good price, it's much cheaper to just get an Athlon X2 cpu.

Core 2 Duo processor, overclocked to 3.0ghz minimum, only then you'll see the true potential of the GTX.

You could get over 10K in 3DMarks or 12K http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=1245721

Since my budget is quite low, and I rather not replace everything I have, would this processor be a significant upgrade from the one I currently have?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz....I can pick it up for $75 and it is a socket 939 so I would not have to change my MB. Or a AMD® Opteron™ 148 (Socket 939)

People really need to stop judging a cards performance solely on 3dmark especially if you have a single core processor. 3dmark06 will absolutely rape your system if you run a single core processor with any video card.

If you really want to see the power of your 8800gtx, run a gpu instensive game (any new game would do) and jack up the eye candy and resolution. You should also read the thread on not worrying about slower cpu's bottlenecking higher end graphics cards.

I don't believe there is any Conroe capable board that support standard DDR.. I might be wrong, but you might have to get some DDR2 ram. I highly recommend DDR2 even if there is a board that supports DDR1.

DDR1 is outdated, and I wouldn't recommend using it on a E6600 and 8800GTX. Get some nice DDR2 800 ram.
The Asrock VSTA 775 Dual motherboard supports DDR1/DDRII but the PCIX bus is only 4x.
