WHats a good AMD CPU, compared to the E6600 - Page 2

its like a core 2 duo, except the "2 series" -- aka less cache

Why don't you just let us know what your budget is for a new build and we'll build you the best thing possible for your money

It's going to be 1000, to 1500. I don't need anything special, I want something that will be good in the next 3-5 years. Then I'll upgrade.

Do you need a monitor as well in your budget of 1000-1500?

Not really. I was just going to buy it on base here. But if you can, it'd be nice, but power would be better.

Wait three weeks
Q6600 $266
DFI P965-S - $150
2 gigs of Gskill HZ - $120
8800GTS 320MB - $280
Case = $100
700W OCZ GXE or reasonable facsimile = $150
2 sata opticals = $60
2 300Gb HDDs = $160
Floppy $10

Roughly $1300.

That build looks good to me. Go with it!

The only thing I would change would be the 320mb GTS to a 640mb GTS if your budget allows.

your cpu will be good enough for gaming. like some have said gpu is more important than cpu in gaming.

the gap between cpu and gpu is too big. cpu leads by far. even the 8800 gtx x 2 is not enough processing power. a x2 3600+ will be good enough even with 2 8800 gtx to play games at max settings. sure it will play better on a core 2 x6800 system, but not big difference, performance in games is usually based on graphics.

For $266 you're going to pass up a quad core? I'm all for GPUs being more important than CPUs but 266 is freakin cheap. If anything the $1X0 dollars saved from a dual core versus the quad will not do much besides maybe give him a 8800GTS 640MB instead of a 320MB and maybe a bigger budget for a monitor. It's up to him.

Now that I think about it... screw the quadcore, pick up an E6600 and get a second 8800GTS 320mb and SLI.... but you'll need a different MoBo, try the ASUS P5N-E.
