pc3200 dead?

I havea biostar T-force motherboard SLI 16x . The only drawback is it's socket 939, which is the old sockect since teh release of socket am2. This motherboard can support up to any athalon fx and x2. My question is should I keep this mobo and get a new processor? And just go for the extra 2gb to get 4gb's of 3200? Honestly I would save load of cash. But if I will miss out I dont want to screw my self over. Is there that big of a difference from ddr2 and ddr bnesides the speed? I mean will 4gb of 3200 be super slow or something?

there is a slight performance over ddr1 to ddr2 (2 is better) and to have 4 gigs in ur system u will need a 64bit os and as for going with am2/940 do u plan on going to up grade with the quad core in the future if so go with the am2

1st of all... don't even consider getting 4 gigs of RAM in an AMD system. It's known to stress the memory controller and hinder your overclock.
*EDIT*

^^^noobdown, get your facts right please. You don't need a 64-bit OS for being able to use all 4 gigs. Just enable PAE (Physical Address Extension) and you'll be able to use all 4 gigs.

And there will be a performance increase from DDR2 to DDR depending on speeds and timings. 4-4-4-12 of DDR2-800 is better than say 2.5-3-3-7 (value) DDR400.

personally i came from a athlon fx-55 system socket 939, and 1 gig of corsair ram ddr 400, to my e6600 2 gigs of pc2 6400. and i didn't notice a huge difference in general, but when it came to running applications, the core 2 was faster. but thats probably due to the cpu and not the ram.

ddr 400 is 200 mhz up and down. ddr 800 is 400 mhz up and down. thats 200 mhz faster. will the system be 2x faster? no.

if you can hold off for a while you might wait around to amd quad core. but if your thinking about switching. from socket 939, why get a amd? why not get a core 2? its faster. but if you have your heart set on amd, i would get an am2 socket because if amd ever releases a quad core it definently won't support socket 939. it will likly support socket am2, no guarantee there because amd likes to switch sockets, but it will more likely support am2.

if you dont have a 64 bit os there is no point to 4 gigs of ram. if you have x64 vista then 4 gigs of ram will help you, in xp x86, no it wont. in xp x64 yes it will
