What's so good about a sound card? Audio Noob - Page 2

Most people get a sound card to take the audio load off the CPU so the CPU can concentrate more on games or whatever CPU intensive application your doing.

You'll need a decent pair of headphones or expensive speakers to tell the difference between most onboard and sound cards

Its kinda like music at 128kbps compared to 192kbps.. some people can hear the difference, others can't.

Well i'm not an audiophile and won't be dropping $100 + for headphones unless i hit the lottery lol.

I figured sound cards would give you more options (actually my realtek HD audio manager has all those features i think, or at least some) and that it would take the pressure off the CPU, but hah, with an e6600 @ 3.2ghz i don't think my CPU is breaking a sweat

What do you guys mean by "noise". Noise as in... the noise from your fans and crap, or noise as in electronic interference or something...

RealTek still uses CPU cycles for processing... and it has been shown that RealTek fakes or lies about some audio features like EAX.

EAX makes certain games sound more realistic. It allows 128 different sounds at once. A sound behind a wall sounds different than without the wall.
Once again...

I can guarantee that if you get anything decent you won't be disappointed. I wouldn't suggest the $300 X-Fi under any circumstances, but I wouldn't recommend anything crappy, either. Get an X-Fi XtremeGamer and I can assure you would never regret having bought it.

I just recently purchased an Audigy2 ZS from a guy here on OCN to upgrade my Realtek HD onboard sound, and I do notice a difference through my Logitech x-530's (same speakers you have except 5.1). I don't really know how to explain, but I'd say that the music is cleaner and it's easier to hear the minor details. The surround features on the Audigy are also much better, especially when gaming. On the Realtek everything either sounded like it was directly to my left or right (like I only had stereo instead of 5.1) and it all sounded like it was the same distance from me no matter where I moved. With the Audigy, the sounds fade in as I approach and fade out as I leave an area. I can turn my POV and the sounds respond appropriately.

I am glad I made the switch to a real sound card, but I was also happy with on-board for years. I'd say to grab an x-fi if you have some extra cash, but don't empty your wallet for one. I also wouldn't bother with the cheaper sound cards as they're basically the same thing as on-board.
