The encoder makes a huge difference too though. LAME is the only encoder that keeps mp3 tolerable at 128kb

MP3's at 128 kb/s are fine on my phone, because the *****ty speakers bottleneck it, but 64 kb/s sounds like a monkey is trying to do an impression of the song!

Telephone is 9.3 kbit iirc

Lol, i need a bigger music player so i can keep all my music at a higher bit rate

I'm getting some nice ear phones soon, some razer pro tone m100s, so i'll see if there really is much of a diff between 100kbps and higher kbps, since i'll have some good equipment to listen to it

I don't quite agree with that one at all. had the x-fi bought for my computer as one of the first parts so it was ready to go from the moment the computer turned on. just ended up busdting it (my fault) and had to use the onboard sound. it sucks. too much bass. and the bass that is there doesn't sound good. does fine for gaming but when listening to music it's horrible.
and my computer is far from silent with 2x120mm fans one of which is a loud ass delta.

and this difference is noticed with cheap little dinkey z530 speakers from logitech.
