E6420 - A few questions - Page 2

That also good call Witchfire
above 400 what will happen is that the strap will change and sometimes there is a dead spot in there, what you will see is that at greater then 400 say 405 will have less performance then 395 even though your going faster. It is because the latency changes or something like that for the NB, but if you can go higher say 415 420 then it makes up for it in clock speed and it doesnt matter.

That is why sometimes the boards with selectable strap and a max strap of 1066 get better times then one that jumps to the 1333 strap, there is a faq on it if you look in the mobo section for intel

i have come accross another problem with which i could really use some help.

I was running prime 95 for 1.5hrs without incident. According to speedfan both cores were at 100% usage, and prime95 didnt report any errors. However i noticed that thread 1 had been working on the same test for 30 mins, while thread 2 had in the same time undergone 15-20 more tests.

At that point my core 1 temp was at only 34C and my core 2 at 39. So, did my core 1 give up and core 2 kept running, or what am i meant to make of this?
In general looking at the two threads i notice that thread 2 generally finishes the current test before thread 1.

Any ideas?

thanks
Happy Sunshine

yep, both cores are at normal temps.
this is what i've got going:

3.2 by 8x400, @46-C1/45 C-2
1.325vcore Bios - 1.272 vcore CPUZ
NB voltage - 1.45
SB voltage - 1.5
ICH - 1.2125
RAM - 2.1 (arent being overclocked as they are rated PC6400 and 2.1v)

Have now been running prime95 for 40 minutes, last time problem occurred at around 1hr. The issue is that at some point Thread 2 finishes the current test before Thread 1. I assume thread 1 is for core 1, thread 2 for core 2. At my last test thread 1 had been hanging on the same test for 30mins, while in the same time thread 2 had completed 15-20 more tests.
Prime95 never reported any errors, i just dont get why thread 2 would be faster than thread 1 at the same task?
I am running the same tests now, so maybe it was a glitch of sorts, i dunno... thats why i am asking!

any ideas? remember, i am a noob, so dont exclude noobish mistakes as possibilities.

If you need any screenies or so to help i can sure provide em.

You could try 425FSB (3.4Ghz) and cpu vcore at 1.4v, with those nice temps you got now I don't think that will be a problem unless it can't handle that speed or vcore
