hi
I was thinking of buying a new cpu. now I use a FX 55 processor. do u guys say that a athlon 64 x2 4400+ or greater is worth it?. my processor works fine. do u guys think it worth upgrading it? I bought the cpu for 180 bucks brand new. did I pay too much for it? any suggestions and answers would be great info for me.
thx

I assume ur on socket 939? Filling out your PC specs in the user CP will help us.

For a 939 upgrade then yes a 4400+ would be worth it if you can find one - 939 is officially a dead socket now however so dont pour too much money into it.

My best advice right now is either to pick up a 3800+ or whatever else seems reasonable and overclock it - or save up for a Core 2 mobo/RAM/CPU combo or if you want to stick with AMD there's nothing stopping you picking up an AM2 mobo and processor (an X2 3600+ Brisbane is an amazing overclocker) and wait for AMD's next line of chips - the Phenom X2 and X4. bear in mind if you upgrade to AM2 or Intel Core 2 you will need new RAM as they use the newer DDR2 - where 939 uses DDR.

However if you want a last hurrah with 939 then an X2 or dual core Opteron is a great upgrade - dual core really does make a big difference

I suspect that your current cpu can run anything you want extremely well and without any hesitation. My 3700 still runs everything I need it to very well, so I haven't upgraded it yet. I think you should hold off until you feel the need to upgrade it. I cannot tell the difference between a Conroe and my 3700 on any of the current games I play with friends. If I could feel any difference, I'd upgrade already I'm curious to see if I need to upgrade before the Conroe killers are out. This next wave of processors from both AMD and Intel look very promising, so we'll see what happens.

with my specs I could only get 6100 score with 3DMark06 that's the reason I wanted to change. well I am currently bidding for a brand new EVGA 8800GTX superclocked sealed pack for 300 bucks now.
will my psu hold my system if I get the new card? won't be sli or ocing anything.

That's where you and I differ. I have no interest in a score of any type. I gauge my need to upgrade on real world use. Since your goal is a higher score on 3DMark06, you should look into multiple core cpus, SLI and Crossfire, and also tweaks for your operating system. You should also be able to find tweaked drivers for your video card that can squeeze a few more points out. Don't forget to run it multiple times since the score will vary somewhat from run to run.

well that's not my only goal. well its just vibe. I don't know why I would want to even upgrade my video card cause I run BF2 on high settings n AA x2 and I don't lag a bit. with my old athlon 64 3500+ I couldn't set it to high settings. so I could see the difference.

Which Thermaltake PSU do you have? 500W TR2 like mine?
