Help on a 939 Socket CPU upgrade

Hi all ... This is a quick question .... I'm looking to upgrade my MOBO (Socket 939) AMD 64 3200+ to something a little faster it was suggested to go with AMD 64 X2 3800+ Box but they are rather hard to find now ... the Spec's on my MOBO says up to 4000+ and supports X2 ... So my question is will a or rather will a Opteron 170 Dual-Core (Socket 939) work the same or have better performance then the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ ???? I know ebay has the 3800+ but they want .. I think way too much ... newegg was selling them for around $90 .. The Opterons are a slightly more expensive but I rather have the 3 year warranty then buying just the 3800+ chip ...

Any suggestion would be a help.

Thanks in advance

Don't waste extra $$$ on Opteron 170's and 180's. Most 165's even bad steppings oc to at least 2.4, so a 165 is highly recommended.
Here's a 165 link. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103588

The Opteron 170 has 2 x 1MB L2 cache, while the A64 X2 3800+ has 2 x 512KB. The Opterons also have the reputation of being better overclockers, but in my experience there's little to choose between them.

In real world performance, I haven't seen much difference between the two types (I've got experience with both, both with my own rigs and in customer rigs).

My personal recommendation is to get whichever is cheaper to get and have fun with it.

It's a Jetway 939GT4L-G-OC 1GB memory PC 400 2 160 Sata disks and a ATI 1650Pro ... It's runs ok on the 3200+ single core but only get 2300mhz out of it ... the CPU was once used for a water cooled system .. hence the top plate was removed for better cooling for the water block .... but I believe without that you can't really air cool it correctly ..Thermal Dynamics... that's why I'm looking

Thanks. Opteron 165 is available and as LyokoHaCk said they are a good choice. I see the egg also has aan X2-4400 for about the same price as the Opty.

Get a X2 3800+ Toledo core. The newer stepping's are hitting 2.8 to 3.0ghz.With your ram you can still hit 3.0ghz if the board can give you a vcore of aleast 1.55v and and if it has a divder that can run your ram at DDR 400 or so with a 300 fsb.

OEM is fine. You still get a warranty. Just not 3 years .And use your own cooling

Well you are probably correct .... I have a Thermaltake Venus 7+ .. is that OK or better then the AMD heatsink+fan ???? BTW I can get over 1.550V for Vcore but only running 1.4 because running it sometimes (present CPU) complains ( playing a game) on over temp and I have the cutoff set at 59c which I think is way to high .. I keep bumping back the volts ... but it doesn't help ... the other thing is abything over 230 mhz the cpu locks up ... But for the $83 ... i'ts worth a try...

Just FYI

Why whould a System lockup ??? I think it's a MOBO fault ... It's just works but I guess for the MOBO price I can't complain but will a faster CPU work ??? I havent' heard one thing about this MOBO ... maybe why it's so cheap ... most have DFI or ABIT.. ASUS is also OK
