Budget System...

Hey folks,

In a few weeks myself and my best mate are moving into his new house... and he wants me to build him a new PC since he's fried his current one.

He wants to salvage as much as he can from his current system which pretty much is only the case and hard drives and possibly the PSU (Although I think he's damaged it). I'm definately going to build him a Conroe system... but it needs to be pretty cheap since he's just signed his life away with his Mortgage.

Anyway, the following is what I had in mind:

Intel Core 2 DUO E4400
£93.99

Asus P5B
£75.19

GeIL Value 2GB PC6400 C5
£56.39

Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB
£117.49

Like I said, it needs to be cheap... hence I've chosen parts I wouldn't necessarily get myself and he's not a massive gamer so I think this should satisfy him nicely. He can also use my system if he wants to play any more demanding games that may not run so well on his PC.

2 Questions I have though are:

Will I be able to overclock the E4400 nicely on the Asus P5B?

For the same price, I can get an EVGA GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB. How would this compare to the X1950 Pro? I'm pretty sure he's not at all interested in DX10... and again, he can use my PC if he needs, so it will purely come down to which has the better peformance at this moment in time.

Any thoughts/opinions are welcome.

(For reference, his current PC is a Prescott 3.4, 2Gb DDR400, 7800GS+)

Get a DS3 1.3 for about 100 USD and DEF a new PSU. PSU is most important part of the system.
1950pro over 8600gts because its cheaper and you need to spend money on a PSU.

Actually, the GTS will be a better performer than the 1950 Pro, the 1950XT is a different story though.

Anyways, yea, for a budget computer, looks great so far. And yea, you can easily overclock the E4400 with the P5N.

I left a PSU out because I know the one he has is relatively good since the system used to be mine It's a 500w Akasa and at the moment if it's not fried and works until the end of June it'll do for the time being.

Trying to keep initial costs down to a minimum... things can and will be added as he can afford them.

Have you considered AMD X2? I would recommend building an X2 system and then get a 8800GTS 320.

To be completely honest AMD hadn't even crossed my mind, but it's definately an option. I'll look into it.

My friend made me chuckle just now ... I showed him the E4400 and he said; "Only a 2.0Ghz processor!?". That should give you some idea as to what kind of person I'm building this PC for

No problem. I realize they are links to newegg, but I imagine the prices are scalable to GBP.
