Voltage drop question

Could 11.87 on the 12 rail and 4.94 on the 5 cook a brand new hard drive? According to antec it wouldn't. It would just cause the drive not to work right, but there was a poof of smoke. Could the drive have been faulty? The 12v rail has given me two different readings, the second was 11.72.

My Speedfan say's that. I think it's bogus reading. However Bios is correct, have you checked bios?

the reading was taken with a volt meter.

I believe that a .13 difference on the 12V and .06 on the 5V is well within reasonable limits for the PSU.

NO PSU will EVER deliver EXACTLY 12V, what's important is that whatever it delivers is within reasonable limits, and does not fluctuate under load (THAT is where the problem really comes in)

I'm no PSU expert, but 12.72A seems like a very high fluctuation to me. I would think that could eventually lead to "poofs of smoke", as you mentioned noticing. I could be wrong, though.

On a side note, is that essentially what ripple is? Noticeable or high fluctuation of current on a rail?

EDIT: Lol, oh ok then.
