RAM sends info to the CPU

And yes this stuff is confusing at first. It took me for ever to figure out multipliers FSB ratios and all that other good stuff. But it was all worth it when i completed my first overclock.

There are three basic levels of system memory.
  • Cache

This is spilt into L1, and L2 (and L3 on some server chips). The L1 cache is very small and is used to store code that is often used by programs, so it doesn't have to load it from slower memory each time. This is cleared when it loses power, i.e. when you turn your computer off.

L2 is larger and for storing more crap that I don't know what is. It's about half the speed of L1, but usually 2-8 times larger than it. On some Intel CPUs, it's closer to 30 times larger, since they have such little L1 cache. L2 is cleared when it loses power
  • RAM

Random Access Memory. It is just what it sounds like. This is where your programs are loaded from the hard drive and are run from. Everything on your computer that runs must go throught the RAM. Your CPU cannot read or write directly to your Hard Drives. RAM is cleared when it loses power.
  • Hard Drives

These are by far the slowest part of your system. A great HDD has than 1/10 the bandwidth of your RAM. In the average system, it's closer to 1/40 of the bandwidth. Everything is stored on your HDD's, but nothing is run from it. It's just storage. Hard Drives are also by far the cheapest form of internal storage, as low as $0.20 per GB, where RAM is still around $40 a GB. Your Hard Drives are the only part of your system that can store data when it is powered off. The reason why it takes so long to boot your computer (30-90 seconds long ) is because everything, your settings, OS, programs, have to be read off the HDD and put into RAM. Same reason why it takes awhile to load games.

sent to and from the ram...since the FSB takes the data from everything....hell even the video card takes ram.....but if i had time to literally think hard on this I could find links and have your head spinning lol.

Man i hope i get at lest 1 +rep for this.....did some major brain picking... and had to remember some stuff i more likly would have forgot haha

ok, so 1gb ram stick can temporarily store 1gb of memory, loaded from the harddrive which will then be sent to the processor as a speed of 800 mhz. correct?
now what all loads from the harddrive to the ram at boot up?

The hard drive ships the files necessary for your OS to boot up when you turn the system on. Then any other applications as they're launched.

Yup...

Mainly windows and all of it's baggage, network stuff, drivers, and everything else needed to get you to your desktop.

What is the memory for in graphics cards, what is stored in them. what does the core clock and the memory clock do?
