Thanks for the info, I think networksolutions.com looks very promising right now.

And just a heads up through Godaddy, They will continue charging you every year to renew, even if the site no longer exists. I've had about 3 or 4 domains through them, and every time I'd hit one year after I registered it they would automatically charge me again. It was pretty annoying considering I hadn't used the domain in like 6 months, But it was relatively painless to cancel. Just more of a hassle then anything. I don't know if all services work like this, but its just my .02

Network solutions will make you pay way more than you need to, and thier management isn't very good. GoDaddy will give you much more bang for your buck. In the end the domain gets registered the same way through either provider, so just go with the cheaper reliable service. GoDaddy is rock solid, I have never had any issues with any of my domains purchased through there.

I have never seen a home ISP allow web servers. They do often allow static IPs, but you have to pay extra. They will not phyically prevent a server from running, but if you are detected they can (and most likely will) cancel your service without warning. You need to ask very specifically if your service contract allows you to run a server. Then get that in writing or ask for verification. Sometimes the CS reps are just clueless.

yes its possible. the best free server software used by most would probably be apache. I am using it right now on my machine without a domain. so in order for me to access my site, instead of typing in www.blah blah blah.com i put in HTTP://xx.xxx.xx.xx then there's my site. im thinking of buying one off 1and1 because it only like 6 dollars a year. but has anyone have any experience with them?

if is easy to call them up and change the IP of the server? thats the main concern, since mine will have to change about 4 times a year between 2 IPs. any help, because i move to school campus, and back home.

anyways i have comcast internet, and my server seems to work pretty well.

I've been hosting my own site for nearly a year now... no complaints from the ISP. They really can't tell unless you getting hundreds of connections a day. In response to the Comcast reply its all in the "if they want" basically its just there to keep businesses from exploiting home connections.

By the way a LAMP server (Linux Apache MySql PHP) is AWESOME
