Is this normal? 8800GTS using ATItool

Thread Starter
I've been working in my overclocking on my 8800GTS using ATItool. I have been going in 10-15mhz increments. I am currently sitting at 660 core/ 940 memory over the stock 513/792.

I am noticing that my computer will randomly lock up after setting the core or memory clock to a higher clock. Yet, when I restart and load the settings at which my computer locked up and run ATItool to scan for artifacts, the computer will continue well beyond an hour or so with no trace of artifacts. This has happened at various points in overclocking my 8800GTS.

Is this normal? Or is my 8800 starving for power?

My temps are very cool for the 8800, never reaching above 63*C at my current 660/940.

This has happened to me also on my 7600GS running at 625/1650. No artifacts but lock ups.
Ive got a good PSU so I dont think its a power problem for me but i dont know about you as the 8800 is a power hog. Is 600W going to be enough??

No idea.

I hope it isn't power starving, because the PSU is suppose to be SLi rated at the very least.....

How many frames per second are you averaging in ATITool?

I was having that same problem, and then i realized my card was getting about half the FPS it should have been getting, so I changed my multiplier/FSB to keep the same clock speed, and it fixed it.

With 660/940, I'm averaging around 1000fps.

Oh alright well then that isn't the problem.

Another thing I would try is drivers if you haven't already. Try some newer/older ones, or maybe just reinstalling them. Possibly reseating the video card may work as well.

You're maxing that PSU and you may be hurting a little for power. If you're OC that CPU then your definitely under powered. That system with the OC vid card and nonOC CPU should draw a little over 30a on the 12v and that PSU is rated about 30a.

I don't know what kind of OC can be expected on the Vid Card so it could be another problem, but you're most likely underpowered with that PSU.

edit: it's not a lack of wattage on the PSU, it's a lack of amps on the 12v rail that's the problem.

Alright, well I dropped my cpu back to stock clocks in hopes that might be pulling some power from my GPU OC, I still get the same freezes using ATItool at 660/940.

No i dont think your maxing out your psu.... I used to have these problems with my 7600GT KO till i v modded it and then it went away. So it seems that your 8800GTS isnt getting enough volts to the core/mem on it. It is not your psu.

Edit:Your psu is fine, you just dont have enough volts for the 8800GTS. But i wouldnt suggest a vmod for it cause they already heat up alot. Also if it wernt getting enough power the card itself would make a beeping noise. So Grumpy is wrong about his assumption i belive.

Edit2: I also have to say that 660 is a pretty high oc on the core for that card http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/1362...oc-thread.html heres some baselines for you. You are in the Med-high part of the oc's. So dont worry about your psu. Your card just doesnt get enough volts on the core/mem.
