I've had the card for a year

Just wondering if it's worth it to try and overclock it.

Yes it is, but you won't get much out of the core--the memory though, that's another case.

I got to 565 core clock and 1325 mem clock (663 effective) on both of my XFX 6600GT cards - no volt mods, no aftermarket cooling - just a good amount of AS5 and low case ambient temps. - mine started to artifact hard at 570 core though, and would artifact very little at memclocks all the way up to 1375 - after that it was completely unstable.

A little artist's pencil line drawing plus tape for a volt mod can fix that though (and aftermarket cooling)

do a search for '6600GT voltmodding' if you really want to clock it to the moon, its relatively easy and cheap, you just need a zalman VGA cooler and some ramsinks

How about if I leave core clock alone, and just do memory? Will that improve game performance?

yea, usually just getting core clock and mem clock to match (in your case 500core and 1000mem) would be ideal, safe, and easy. Just use rivatuner or the nvidia coolbits to increase the memclock a bit - shouldnt increase the card's operating temperature by more than 2C -- and anything up to about 80C is completely safe for that card.

49c idle is a bit higher than I expected, but that means full load shoudl be somewhere around 67-71C which is acceptable - Id look into reseating the stock heatsink with AS5 applied though, unless you have a warranty on that card still.

Run ATi Tool error test to make sure it doesnt error and to monitor max temperature as well [ http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...Tool_0.26.html ]

Core 507 Mhz and Memory 1015

Idle ~ 46C
Artifact testing takes it to around 65C

So you say 70-80 under load should be max?
