Identifiying cpu stepping?

Thread Starter
I've done a search on this as im sure it's been covered before but i've not found a thread that says how to identify what stepping your Core 2 duo is.

My E6700 has just arrived so i want to know how well this baby will overclock

I assume it's the Version number and the letter it starts with?

In which case i've got a D

It should be printed on the IHS.

Check this out. http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...c-voltage.html At the bottom there is pictures of how to find the stepping/week.

it will be on both the box and the IHS of the processor itself.

Not to take over your thread, but, how does stepping/week effect the CPU?

Thread Starter
Different weeks of cpu and different steppings (batchs?) overclock better than others. i guess it;s the quality of the silicon or something.

So, mines a week 33 stepping A

That any good?

The earlier the weeks the better in some cases. i.e. week 28-29 were better than the 33. But you never know till you start clocking that bad boy. Also B stepping were better than the A steppings.

Not just quality of silicon. Both AMD and Intel tweak their CPU manufactoring process. They charge tiny parameters they end up help to improve yield and/or quality. AMD does it on the fly while Intel does it in large batch steps. That means AMD steppings tend to be a bit more unpredictable.
