Need advice and understanding on new rig

Thread Starter
Hi. I'm looking at buying a new rig here in as month or so. I read an article about the quad core. (http://www.short-media.com/articles/quad_core) What it was saying is that quad core is the future. That programmers will be/are writing applications to take full advantage of all the cores. Which makes buying a quad core computer worthy of the future. Am I understanding this correct?

I have $4K to spend on a system. However, that doesn't mean I want to spend it all. I'm starting college next August for animation, web design and gaming. I'll be doing audio and video. I'll need huge hard drives. I'm going to use 2 monitors...if not 3. I'll use it TV and radio also.

Please feed free to design a super nice rig for me. If you need more info...I'll supply it.

Thanks,
Brandon

Dual/Quad core technology is now becoming more and more accessible to everyone. Programmers are beginning to write in code to take advantage of this. In a few years it'll be common practice to have seperate cores handle different aspects of a program.

The advantages of a quad core are still better than a single core as most OS can determine what programs to run on which core to balance out the load.

Well, here's your ultimate rig as of now. I am going to suggest the Core 2 Quad Q6600 because on july 22, the price goes down from 530$ to 266$, I dont know if you can wait untill them, if you cannot, judge between that and the E6600(regular dual core conroe):

Q6600. 2.4 Ghz, 8MB cache, 1066mhz fsb, amazing overclocker. 266$
- cpu cooling: Thermaltake big typhoon + Silverstone 120mm fan. 60$. you dont need extreme cooling with the conroes but the older batches of the Q6600 ran somewhat hot. this cooler will cool it down to the max and the fan will help

Asus P5N32 680i Chipset motherboard. 200$ or the P5NE-SLI for 129$. both those boards support 1333mhz so are future proof, Sli just in case, gigabit lan, high definition audio. they are preety much the same board in terms of performance exept the P5N32 has a few more options(2lan, 680i chipset?).

2 Gb G.SKiLL ddr2-800 HZs. D9 micron memory under the hood, simply the most overclockable ram I have ever seen. Some guy here got em to 1100mhz. YOU will probably need two sets to make 4GB with your video editing and such.

500gb Seagate barracuda, perpandicular 16mb cache ncq Sata2 drive. If you want a Little extra performance, Stripe two of these 250gb sata2 drives in Raid-0. cheaper than a 36gb raptor for 100$, faster AND bigger. need I say more?

EVGA 8800GTS 320MB for 269$

X-FI xtremegamer sound card90$. if you dont wanna go that far, stick with the onboard sound.

Coolermaster Centurion 5 case. 49$

X-clio 500w power supply. 49$, very reliable brand.

16X DVD RW+ well, any will do really.. samsung, plextor, sony etc..

If you're going to school, eight out of ten says you're gonna need to invest in a Mac. MacBook, iMac, Mac Pro: one of those. It's going to benefit you, if dealing with video, to be able to say you USE Final Cut Pro or you're certified. And, your school might be teaching media on Apple hardware.

You also get the best of both worlds considering that you can run Windows XP or Vista on Intel-Macs.

I'd advise against building a Windows based machine if you're going to school for digital content creation. A reliable Mac's gonna take you a long way.

Yeah Mac's are the same hardware as real PC's now anyways. Think of it as getting a computer with a Digital Arts orientation.

Thanks for the reply. July is fine. As much as I want a new rig, I'm in no hurry. Saving $$ is good.

Is there much of a difference between QX6600 and QX6700? I know the QX6800 needs to be water cooled. Sounds like a headache.

I was looking at the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB.

Personally if I was going to spend it all I would build an Intel rig and get a mac book or mac book pro. Something like this:

And then make something like this:

Great. Now you f'ed my world all up. LOL. I've only used a PC. I'm not familiar with Macs at all. Other than the commercials. I've "heard" Macs are a better graphics system. Don't knows if it's true.

I'm taking internet courses. Software I'll be learning/using; Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max and others.

That's cool you can use XP/Vista on a Mac. Weird tho.

Any ideas as to where I can look to build one?
