To dual boot I would suggest the following: load windows onto a separate hdd from where you want linux - if you have a new fancy hdd, use it here, not all linux distros will use new hdd drives. Download a iso image of your chosen linux distro, and burn it to disc. Then, reboot to cd with your linux disk in. Make sure during the formatting section to not format over windows. Install Linux. Grub or Lilo (which will install with linux) will recognize your windows disk, and when you reboot again, you will be asked to choose between them.

On subsequent boots, choose your os for what you sat down to do.

The best way to learn how to use linux is to go to gentoo.org and do a minimal install cd, with the installation guide...

If you can get through that, then you will be good forever.
