ubuntu is a very popular variant
Ya well not sure what to use, i just want a linux to goof around on and learn some basic things about it.

Also wondering if its possible to install on my backup hard drive in my main computer and be able to run linux off of it while having windows running as well.

Kinda like switching between the two?

You can also set up a dual-boot system. It doesn't run both at once, but you can re-boot to the other when needed. You can (from linux) access your windows files, and you can go to windows when you need to run a game or...well, I can't think of anything else windows does better.

You mean, have linux and windows running simultaneously, or having access to linux files from windows?

Im pretty sure he means to dual boot aka have both linux and windows installed on the same drive, and be able to select which OS he would like to use when booting up his system.

What dual-booting Windows and Linux will do is install a simple program that runs every time you turn on your computer, but before any operating system starts loading. It lets you select which operating system you want to run. All you have to switch is reboot and choose the other one.

nope, hear ill explain what im looking to do.

1. Have windows XP installed on HDD 1
2. Have linux installed on HDD 2
3. be able to run both linux and windows at the same time and switch between the two whenever i want.

OR

1. Have windows XP installed and linux on HDD 1
2. Have my spare backup HDD empty for backup files and so forth
3. be able to run both OS at same time.

Basically i dont want to do any rebooting or any of that gay stuff.

"dislike reboots"

I hope so.

I'd suggest setting up a dual boot system with Ubuntu and windows. Ubuntu's set up makes even windows' look complicated, and it has a shallow learning curve for linux. Any time you get stuck, you can flee linux and load windows.

You can save your linux files so windows can see them, too.

No, you can't do that.

You can run Linux IN Windows, via VMWare, but it's not nearly as fast.

No, you're SOL there. The whole point of an operating system is lost if it is running within another operating system.

You can set up two separate machines and have a kvm switch to go from one to the other, and with a network even share files and other devices.

I don't know there is one. And you never know, perhaps they only hate each other because they are competing for uncle Billy's affection.

To dual boot I would suggest the following: load windows onto a separate hdd from where you want linux - if you have a new fancy hdd, use it here, not all linux distros will use new hdd drives. Download a iso image of your chosen linux distro, and burn it to disc. Then, reboot to cd with your linux disk in. Make sure during the formatting section to not format over windows. Install Linux. Grub or Lilo (which will install with linux) will recognize your windows disk, and when you reboot again, you will be asked to choose between them.

On subsequent boots, choose your os for what you sat down to do.
