Need help overclocking my new Q6600

post #1 of 22
Thread Starter
I would like any advice from people with an asus extreme striker mobo and a quad core.

I have had the Q6600 @ 3150MHz but I got BSODs every so offten I did run it and get a 3dmark06 score of 12970.

my ram is XMS2 8500 1066MHz so I have room to play with that.

CPU heat is not a problem current max temp seen is 26C

I need some help with what to change or point me to a link that explains how to overclock with the striker board.

any info will help.

Can you list what voltages you are currently using? Very nice rig btw.

First of all keep an eye on load temperature, not idle, and make sure you're using TAT or Core Temp 0.94 to monitor your temps. Speedfan and other monitoring programs may read 15C too low.

If your getting BSOD you might not be putting enough voltage through your RAM. Make sure you're at at least 2.0V if not more for that speed.

I can't tell you exactly what to set in the BIOS, but this is what I'm using to give you an idea.

Q6600 @ 3200 MHz
FSB = 356
CPU multi = 9x
RAM divider = 4/5 for DDR2 890 4/4/4/10
RAM voltage = 2.15v
Vcore = 1.40v
The rest of the voltages are at their lowest.

Try setting loose timings on your RAM (5/5/5/15) so you can be sure they're not holding you back from a higher OC.

I don't know the specifics of your mobo, but if you're still running into stability issues try raising the northbridge (MCH) and FSB voltages a little.

What Vcore were you using when you were getting the BSOD?

I went from stock 1.265v to 1.618V I'm sure I need some voltage in the right places but this board has so many options that I've nevr seen before.

1.618V is way to much!!

Try 333x9 @ 1.350 Vcore with your ram on a 3/2 divider for DDR2 1000.
Set the RAM voltage to 2.2v and set the rest of the voltages to there lowest or AUTO.

Maybe someone with your board would know better settings for the other voltages. Either way the I would think/hope the Striker Extreme can easily handle a FSB of 333 with low voltages for the chipsets.

EDIT : Keep your Vcore under 1.50v to 1.55v if you plan on keeping that chip for a bit.

I can adjust the rated front side bus and not the bus speed can you show me the math. When you tell me to set to fsb to 333 I need to know what the rated fsb will be? and the multi is locked at 9 I can change it but it goes right back

the rated fsb will be 1333. rated fsb = bus speed x 4
