What is you current operating system, if its windows xp get a partition manager and resize your current partition, you will at least need 5 gb, dont forget that linux requires one partition for swap, and one for linux itself (ext3) if you want to share files between linux and windows i recommend that you also create a fat32 partition which both can share.

to summarize,
1) get a partition manager
2) 2 resize windows partition but don't format the new space you created
3)run kubuntu installation , and create the 2 partitions you need swap and and ext3

So I will need 3 new partitions? One for the os, one for swap, and a fat32?
Do you have recommended programs for partitioning?

sorry for the early bump, but ive downloaded at least 10 partitioning programs and the only ones that work right are the ones I have to pay for. Does anyone know of a good free partitioning program?

+ i still dont know how big the fat32 section should be

around 10-15 gb of fat should be fine considering you have 160 gb hd. also go to download.com and search for free partition managers,
