Memory question

Ok I realize this question might sound a little ridiculous, but how do I take advantage of the 800mhz ram that I purchased. I am only getting 400mhz out of it now. Does it involve overclocking the processor, or what? I am still new so please go easy.

If you mean that CPU-Z 'only' reports 400MHz, then you have nothing to worry. CPU-Z reports the 'external frequency'. Since DDR2 RAM is DDR, thus double data rate, 400MHz reported by CPU-Z is the same as full DDR2 800 speeds

You're good to go!

I noticed it was set to 400mhz so I changed it to 800mhz. Does this do anything? Or is it already running at 800mhz? I bought this because of the rebate and noticed that the 800mhz was a bonus. What exactly does this differnce of 400mhz to 800mhz make? What is this actually doing for my computer...ie how does it work?

Your RAM runs a little faster, which has a benefit in some applications (mostly RAM intensive benchmarks, like SuperPi, and RAM intensive applications). You will not really notive much of a real world difference though.

It's good RAM, and gives you plenty headroom once you start to overclock. When you overclock though, you want to reduce your RAM speed a little, since it will go up together with the CPU clock.

I did notice a difference in Oblivion. I had this processor in a Dell, which again....I loathe . I bought it because I was in school and needed a computer right away. Unfortunaltey I did not have enough to build my own, but finally had the money to buy a new case, motherboard, and CPU fan. It seemed like Oblivion ran rather choppy in my Dell at times, on the same video card, memory, processor....etc. I took Oblivion for a test run last night and it ran really smooth, a lot more so than before. I thought maybe it could be because of the memory running faster, or my processor maybe being a little cooler with the new CPU fan. Either way it sure runs faster than it did in my Dell. I thought it was because of the RAM, but I dont' know. I sure like having control of everything....even if I don't understand it yet.

Yeah, probably the RAM makes a difference there.

Not to bash Dell, but it seems every time you take two PC's with the same statistics (other than a DELL XPS) and one's a Dell, the Dell will be outperformed by the other PC.

Well yeah and Dell screwed me. I was supposed to get the Express Upgrade to Vista Home Premium. The only thing I was required to pay was their shipping fee. I accidently put the wrong expiration date when signing up. I didn't realize why they wouldn't except my credit card since nothing told me the reason, but that it was declined. Well I went on their site and found that there was a box, which I thought was saying that I wanted my copy of Vista. So I figured this was why it didn't go through. I checked the box and of coarse had I of read a little closer I would have noticed it said, "I would NOT like my copy of Windows Vista." Well yeah it was a dumb mistake, but still why wouldn't I want a program that cost upwards of $180.00 ( Just a guess cause I know its somewhere close) for a mere $10.00? That is rediculous.

Anyway I am not sure why they would put that box there in the first place unless it is a legal thing, or they are banking on the fact that some genius like me will actually say "No please keep my copy of Vista because I am retarded and don't like things almost free." I have also been hearing some talk on the news that an attorney is suing Dell because they have tried to scam people with their credit. This might have turned out to be nothing, or maybe its just not gone to court yet. I feel scammed though cause I called them and explained it. They just said they would send me to some department and they would call me back. Finally I spoke to a supervisor who informed me that, "You checked the box so there is nothing we can do for you." Now can you see why I think its a scam...dirty business. They wouldn't even try to work with me and fix it....and they hardly speak English. I have nothing agaisnt people who don't, but when I am trying to conduct some type of business it seems like they should.

Makes me angry all over again....lol.
