Friend in US has $500 for build

Thread Starter
An online friend of mine had a S939 system, but it had a lousy PSU. I told him it was likely to explode, since it didn't have nearly enough watts/amps for his x850XT PE. (I think it was a 250 watt generic) I pointed him towards this, and told him to stop using his PC until it arrived.

He said he didn't have the money, so I guess he didn't order it or stop using his PC. A week later it blew up. Now that the Summer has started(8 months later?) he's finally got some cash to rebuild his PC.

My advice to him was to sell off his remaining S939 stuff(since he had single-core S939), and get all new AM2. I don't search newegg very often because Canadians can't buy anything there, so tell me if I missed some grand deal.

PSU - Sparkle 400w ($52)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103013

Videocard - 7900GS ($155)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130056

CPU - X2 3600+ ($69)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103046

Motherboard - Biostar TForce 550 ($85 - $10MIR)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138026

Memory - Corsair Value Select ($65)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098

DVD Burner - $38
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106070

He will not be overclocking. 8 months without a PC make you want to do everything possible to keep yours running.

This comes to roughly $464. He told me he could stretch it to $600 if needed, but right around $500 is preferred. Are there any killer deals I'm missing? He probably won't be upgrading again for a while. I was considering a better videocard, but 8800GTS's are all around $300, which would put the build above $600.

You can get the X1950Pro for 129$ after MIR, save you a few extra bucks there. ALso, for the same price, a MORE powerfull 500W psu, sli certified from XCLIO(actually 49.99$). the ram will serve you very well, since the fsb wont run that high, he can synch it easily. With the bucks saved, around the same price (169.99$) get an X1950XT which will mop the 79000gs

I saw that 8600GTS, but the 8600GTS only has image quality going for it; the performance is on-par or worse than a 7900GS.

The x1950XT looks like a killer deal. He likes ATI cards, too, so that may be the route to go. ATI cards do guzzle power, though, so I agree that a PSU upgrade is in order.

What attracted me to the Sparkle, was it providing just over 300 watts on the +12V rails before the stability takes a dip.

The HDDs didn't fry. The videocard didn't either, but his x850XT PE is apparently AGP. The rest of the components are either totally dead, or part dead. He has a DVD burner already, but he also has two PATA HD's, so it's either upgrade to SATA, or buy a PCI IDE card.

That combo deal is cheap, but I can't recommend it. I personally have had issues with VIA chipsets in the past. With my first Athlon XP, several copy protections for games disliked the chipset drivers, which prevented the games from running. I'm sticking with an nForce 4/5/6.

New HD - Seagate 320GB ($80)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140

He does have two HDs of unspecified size, so that $80 could be spent on other things.

You spent more than $500 on your computer. So did I, and I wouldn't get it for myself either. He knows that, but the alternative is not getting anything. Besides, even a XCLIO is better than a 250w generic.

I like your suggestions - that combo is nice. However, it only saves $10 before MIR($40 after). I'm still inclined to recommend the TForce 550, since I know Biostar is actively developing and improving the BIOS, and tons of people on here(5-6?) have one and know its quirks.

I will not be recommending a Rosewill PSU. I'm trying to recommend stuff that has a history of *not* exploding. At least with the Sparkle, I know it'll die without taking anything with it, and block surges even if it means comitting suicide. A dead PSU is better than a dead [insert other component here]. I have heard from many that Rosewills fail at blocking strong power surges. I'm unsure for XCLIO.
