To get 400 MB/s sustained though, you'd probably need like 12 drives.
With the ARC-1210, 1 hard drive will burst at some 600MB/s:

Well I am not making those kinds of numbers...but AI am also running RAID5 since I can

I have two sets of Four HDDs to try out. Four 74GB Raptors and Four Seagate 7200.10 250GB.

After wrestling with Vista 64 Bit I can say that Vista is not happening on the Areca...not today anyway. Too frazzled to wrestle further so I installed XP on the array.

The smart thing to do would have been to install on a single drive on the onboard SAATA and then bench empty volumes...as swapping from type of Array to type of array would be somewhat easier.

At this point I am just going to stick with Raprors for a bit..when I tear it all apart again I will check the Perps.

Wow, there is some serious diminishing rate of returns with more then 1 drive. You're pretty much getting no extra performance on burst.

Over 200 MB/s sustained, and around 8ms seek.

Sounds good to me

BTW, with the Areca-1210, DO use RAID 5, you take NO performance hit for reads, and almost no performance hit for writes (let's say you have 4 drives, you'll get the write speed of 3 drives, due to the parity bit, however, with onboard RAID 5, that calculation will kill performance, with Areca-1210, there's absolutely no performance hit besides the fact that you get 1 drive slower write speeds, which is NOTHING considering the huge benefit of redundancy)

Granted, even if you don't care about redundancy and don't mind losing all your data, wouldn't it be nicer to pick the time when you reinstall everything, rather then having your machine pick that time for you?

Yes it would

I have gotten away running RAID0 since my P4P800SE ICH5R without a failure...so I think the common conceptionthat RAID0 is made of FAIL might be a little off base...

But still if you can run with redundancy without the slower than poop phenom why not?

I got the 'reca primarily because I keep hearing how great they are and thought I would give it a shot...

I had my RAID_0 fail after my video card crapped out and caused a sudden restart during a CSS game I was hosting.
Since then, i have just gone w/ one HDD for my system drive, since I cannot afford to get another 2 HDD's right now, and my SCSI's are only 20g a piece...so no use in using them for a main array.
