Need suggestions for an upgrade... (CPU/Mobo/RAM)

Thread Starter
Here is my current system:

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Opteron 165
2 GB RAM (DDR1, Corsair XMS PC3200)
WD Raptor 74 GB HD (old model)
WD Raptor 150 GB HD
nVidia Geforce 8800 GTX
Watercooling

So... obviously my CPU is holding the video card back so I want to get a new one but that requires me to get a new motherboard and new RAM.

What should I get? I have $575 to spend and I can also sell my existing CPU and RAM for $200, so that leaves me with $775 to spend. (sort of)

It looks the best CPU is the Core2 Duo E6400 (but I'm not sure) but I have no idea what to get for RAM (Corsair XMS??) and the motherboard.

Please help!

Well, you don't necessarily have to get a new mobo/CPU/RAM--I believe you have a decent OC'ing mobo there, so if you've hit the ceiling with your current opty, you can just get a new CPU, like a 3800+ X2, which are supposed to OC fairly easily to 2.8-3.0GHz. However, it would make sense, that if you want to upgrade now, you do it completely. So anyway...

I would just get a E6300 if you're looking at a 6400--they both OC to about the same speed, so no need to spend more money on the 6400. The 6x20's are also out (with 4mb cache instead of 2mb), but have not been proven overclockers yet, so if it were me, I'd not get one of those.

I believe that the G.Skill HZ's are quite popular here on OCN, and OC to a very high limit and are quite cheap. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231065

The motherboard--if to overclock--I would recommend an ASUS P5B-E (or P5B-deluxe if you're going to dabble in SLI). It's one of the best C2D overclockers, and quite popular as well. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131070

So that's my humble suggestion. I'm sure others will have better ones. But it's not a bad start to a great gaming rig!

For motherboard: ASUS P5B-Plus

Memory: G.SKILL F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

Cooler: TUNIQ TOWER 120

The P5B-Plus is one of the best overclockers for the money, see review here.

G.Skill HZs are also great for overclocking and of course, a Tuniq Tower 120 is needed for some overclocking speed with the ability to keep the C2D running cool even overclocked. Mine does 43c full load with the TT120.

Other things I'd suggest is to wait for the end of July and by then the Quad-Core Q6600 will cost $266 and the E6600 will be lower than $200 or close to.

On the motherboard, if you want get the ASUS P5K-Deluxe, it comes with the latest Intel chipset, the P35 and also a new south-bridge, the ICH9-R. It's said that it overclocks better than the P965 chipsets.......but the board it's about $250 right now and I'm sure it will go down in price soon too.

What's the difference between the P5B-E, P5B-Plus and P5B-Deluxe?

I don't think I'll ever do SLI (at least not anytime soon), so I don't need anything with SLI features.

Also, what is the difference in CPU multipliers between the E6300, E6400, and E6600? Since I have a watercooling setup I think I'll be able to overclock pretty good so I don't want to buy the E6600 unless I'm really getting something out of it...

The P5B-E vs the P5B-Plus? The Plus has all solid capacitors and a black PCB board, other than that? they're the same......now the Deluxe has 8 phase power change and Stack Cool 2 which makes the board run a little cool and comes with a bunch of fancy stuff that you may or may not use at all. Also comes with dual lan.

If you're going to use a WC set up, then go for the P5B-Plus or Deluxe. Those two will be able to handle the power better.......or the P5K-Deluxe.

Someone at XS has it and it's a good overclocking board, problem is that XS is down currently.

So... the order goes P5B-E --> P5B-Plus --> P5B-Deluxe?

Do I really need the deluxe if I don't ever plan on doing SLI? However I'll buy it if thats what I SHOULD get...

Well?...........That's up to you whether or not you're going to use all the extra stuff the deluxe comes with.

I've seen the Plus getting pretty high, as high as the Deluxe, so it'd all depend on you.

Either board will overclock sky-high.

But just remember, Peryn CPUs will be out sometime soon and there's a possibility that the P965 chispets may not support those CPUs, thanks to Intel which may or may not allow it.
So, in that case the P5K-Deluxe will be the choice right now just in case you decide on a Peryn CPU.

Peryn will be the 45nm of C2D, said to have a boost in performance, higher than current C2D but then again, the overclocking potential of Peryn is unknown at this moment. But nevertheless, think about how long you'll have this rig and then make the choice.

why does everyone pass by PQI TURBO RAM pc3200 for overclocking ability? never see anyone mention that ram , supposed to be a GREAT overclocker??????

I agree for the most part.

Although don't get the G.Skill HZ unless you are really going to take advantage of that extra speed, they go up to like 1000MHz.
With that 9x multiplier on the E6600 it might be hard to use that fast of a memory speed at 1:1 ratio. I'm running bellow 800MHz on mine lol.

Tuniq Tower would do you well, but i would personally go with the thermal take ultra 120.

Well, I'd like to overclock the system as much as possible and since I have watercooling I should be able to get it quite high...

So it seems like everybody agrees on the G.SKILL RAM and the P5B-Plus motherboard, but should I get the E6400 or E6600? The difference is only $40 on NewEgg, but which will be better to overclock?

EDIT: Also, what about the E6420s?
