C2D E6400 Running Dangerously Hot Help!

Thread Starter
Right I have had this rig running stock since last September but haven't felt the need to OC at all until now.

Just installed Speedfan to check on temps and to my horror its running way too hot. As i said its all stock. Intel HSF and Grease.

IT's been running perfectly fine had no cause for concern til now i see these figures eeek!

Comp has been on for over 12 hours at this moment in time and my room is quite hot about 80F [25c]

Sooo basically how can it be this hot surely my room temp and running time wont have that big of an effect on it?

Any help muuch appreciated! I'm worried that i have caused damage on the poor CPU!

Is that idle temps? Wow, amazingly high... I would really invest in a new cooler if I were you. Or reseat the stock cooler with some better cooling paste like Arctic Silver 5.

Yeah the temps are pretty much the same at idol.

Ok well ill take a look at getting a new cooler and paste in next few days. See if a bit of spring cleaning will help.

those temps look like junk anyway. Speedfan sucks for getting accurate temps, try TAT. (Unless you have phase, there's no way temp 3 is -2c)

Download the following temp monitors.
CoreTemp
TAT

Open both of these and compare their temps. Tell us when you're done.

That doesn't look good dude. I would recommend you reseting your heat sink.

On your heat sink there are 4 pins. On each pin, there is a curved arrow. When it's curved and pointed outward (away from the heat sink) that is LOCK mode. Pointing inward is unlock.

What I do is I set all 4 into locking position and put the heat sink on my CPU, press the pins down, you'll hear a click and it'll lock.

In the meanwhile, I'm guessing you have to stay at stock speeds. In that case you could lower the voltage quite a bit (depending on the stepping). You could probably lower it from 1.325v (stock vcore) to 1.25v or even 1.20/1.15v. It will drop the temp quite a bit.
