Thanks. I'm always wary of recommending what I use--because I don't want to promote fanboyism. But I think given the two choices, it's the smarter one (though not the cheaper). However, like I mentioned, the person probably won't see any difference between the two at relatively low resolutions, so either would be fine. Thanks for the rep!

Well

the x1950pro is decent and does have better benchies then the 8600gt

Personall I have found ATI drivers to suck.

However when there drivers do happen to work they are great.

Be ready for some trial and error.

The 8600 has the DX10 you want but isn't as good

Do you plan on upgrading soon is something you forgot to say because if thius is long term 8600

if its short term (10 months?) then the x1950

it is just an assumption that more RAM is better.

It is a common misconseption with people.

I agree. but figured unless maybe he had some other idea behind it.

do find it funny though on computers it is assumed a C2D with 1gb of ram is better then a celron with 4gb of ram. but with gpu's a x1950 with 256 is slower then lets say a tnt2 that they managed to get 512mb of ram (lets pretend for a moment)

well more ram helps at higher res if hes not running the higher res it dont really help out that much. If your not going to overclock the 1950pro probly your best bet if you wanted to overclock the 7900gs would be your best bet.

Why would you compare two cards where one is priced about 40% more than the other? If you have a specific price limit (I'd say $200 by your first post), why would you pick a card from another vendor that is $54 dollars less?

I think a more apt comparison would be between the 8600GTS 256mb and the X1950Pro 512mb that you stated. They are comparably priced, and both are great cards.

Now if you do want to pay a little less (~ $150), the 7900GS is a good card. The 8600GT you mentioned is an okay card IMO if you must have DX10, but I'd go with the GTS if you could afford it. Also, the X1950Pro comes in a 256mb version for a little less as well.

Thread Starter
Well, Chozart, it would mainly be for FsX, and I'm not thinking of upgrading to Vista anytime soon. I'd probably get a better card again at like Christmas.
EDIT: I don't need DX10, and I'd rather a card that's 256-bit, as opposed to 128. Plus, my budget (at the max max) would be about £115 ($230ish)

Well the x1950 pro then

However since DX10 will be coming out soon around then it will not have a good resale.

ALso the 8600gts kills the 8600gt (for the price)
