[OC]E6320 on P5N-E SLI problems

post #1 of 30
Thread Starter
Hey guys,

like my title says, I've got a problem when I try to overclock my E6320. I've just recently bought a new system, and as usual, I want to overclock this system.
First of all the specs:

Intel E6320
Asus P5N-E SLI
Patriot DDR2 PC2-6400 2x 1GB (4-4-4-12)
Coolermaster RealPower 550W
Asus 8800GTS 640MB
WaterCooling build with Innovatec parts.

My problem is, I can't get my system stable at any overclock. I thought I started of relatively low by putting the system on '2400MHz' to get some info. At this speed the system is very unstable, so I tried lowering the speed a couple of times, until I hit '2000MHz'. This is only '134MHz' above standard, and it should go much further. But I tried going further anyways, reaching speeds of '3150MHz' with the same issues as on '2000MHz'.

Windows will start at these speeds, CPU-Z shows all information correctly, I can run pi 1M perfectly, but when I stress the system with Orthos it locks up or windows restarts. If I don't stress it, I can work with my computer a bit longer, but it's never the same timeframe. One time I can work 15 minutes before freezing or restarting, another time I can work up to 2 hours.

To check some things I ran Memtest, cause at stockspeeds stressing the RAM with Orthos gave me errors. Running Memtest also gives me errors. So I tried each Module alone, no problems, I tried each different slot on the mainboard, no problems, I tried running them in SingleChannel, no problems. But as soon as I put them in DualChannel I get Errors. The timings are also weird on DualChannel. The computer auto sets them to '6-6-6-31' instead of the standard '5-5-5-15'. In SingleChannel the computer sets them at '5-5-5-15' correctly. I manually put them on '4-4-4-12' cause the manufacturer guarenteed these setting to work. The Overclocking problems are the same though, weather I run DC or not.

Now my questions are: Why is my computer so unstable when I overclock? Why can't I run DC, Is this related to my unstable system? I personally suspect something to be wrong with my motherboard, but I'm not sure.

Temps:
@ stock: 37/39 idle 40/41 load
@ 2400: 40/41 idle 43/45 load
@ 3150: 45/46 idle 49/49 load

Voltages:
3.3V = 3.29V
5V = 4.89V
12V = 12.06V

I'd like to hear your thoughts about this.

CPU might not have enough voltage also check if your RAM is getting the voltage it needs.

well, you havent said anything about vcore voltage so i assume you left it at 'auto' or stock, change it to 1.4v and try 3ghz again

*edit* damn Christiaan beat me to it ;p

Ah yes I'm sorry about that, I tried with different VCore settings and also with different NB settings. I'll list it up:

2400 - VCore @ 1.35V - NB @ 1.2V and also tried VCore @ 1.4V - NB @ 1.4V
3150 - VCore @ 1.4V - NB @ 1.4V

But as I said, the problems also occur when I overclock to a simple 2000MHz, which is only 134 above the standard 1866MHz. The 2000MHz attempt was with everything on stock.

Hurm, it seems the E6420/E6320's are becoming worse and worse for overclocking. First batches were great and reached 3.5/6ghz @ 1.5v, later batches reachers 3.4ish on 1.5v. The Batch my 6420 came from reaches 3.2ghz at 1.5v. Soon they wont be able to overclock at all D:

Try the black slots. I know it's weird, apparently it works. Also, set RAM on auto voltage.

Thx, I'll give it a try right away, I'll report back my findings

Edit:

The memory is working good now and doesn't give out errors in Dual Channel mode anymore. Any overclock I do is still unstable.

With the VCore @ 1.35V and the NB @ 1.4 I can run my system @ 2500MHz and it hasn't stopped yet, going higher then 2500MHz makes Orthos stop again with errors.

Try upping the voltage more, just to see if it stabilizes. Just to cancel out the CPU voltage as reason so you can't overclock.
