Getting Confused

Thread Starter
Hi

I'm gathering parts for my first overclocking project. I've got a 965P-DS3P rev 3.3.

Can someone please tell me where I should start in terms of overclocking this?

I've read some guides but I was wondering what settings people on here have tried with this board?

Also, is the E2140 worth getting or should I be looking at an E4300 or E6300 to start?

Also, what is a "strap"???

Sorry, one more thing. Does 1:1 mean that the FSB is matching the memory speed? ie, ddr2 800 = fsb of 400mhz?

Thanks

A strap is a thing that has to do with the NB and the FSB ranges it supports yours goes up to 1333 I believe. Got the cash get the 6300 all the way.

What is your budget? If you can afford a 4300 or 6300, then I would get one of those, but from what I have seen, the "Lite" models like the 2140 deliver good performance for price, don't see them for sale anywhere right now but they are supposed to be around $100.

A strap is an internal timing in the NB. Much like your RAM, when run at a high speed the NB will loosen the timings (move to a different strap) on the FSB, this provides greater stability. Most mobo's will change the strap when moving from a FSB of 400 to 401. This means that most benchmarks will be slower at a FSB of 401 then 400.

Quite often benchmarks will not be able to overcome the loss in performance from the higher strap until a FSB of 430+ is attained.

You definitely want to go with the E4300 or E6320. (Not the E6300, it cost more than the E6320!)

Try reading the guides in my signature regarding Intel overclocking. They will help you a bunch!
