It seems to be quite able to overclock, I wouldn't be so quick to throw it away.

http://www.ocworkbench.com/2005/asro...ns-HDTV/g4.htm

There are Ocing options. If the CPU temperature is below 55-60°C you could try to overclock a bit. Put the ram on 533, Vram on "high", and lift the FSB from 200 to 210. This should make your CPU a 3.15GHz P4. Normally, these CPUs with adequate cooling go to 3.6-3.8GHz.

*EDIT I think you should OC, at least because once you'll want to learn. Since you don't care much about this rig you can use it as a lab-rat. I think every one of us has started this way, and fortunately you have both a mobo and a CPU that handles this well.

ok, the CPU was at 51°C so I set the ram to 667, vram on high, and changed the cpu frequency to 240 which made it 3.6GHZ and I got a 3DMark06 score of 5294 ! a big improvement. Should I still be getting more? should I push it to 3.7GHZ or even 3.8? Also, should I change the PCIe frequency? currently it's at 100. Thanks very much for all your help. 3dmark06 link below:

just pushed it to 3.7GHz I ran a performance test on COH and it said 'average' still. I did notice an increase of 8 fps in Oblivion, I'll try some more...

Great, I'm surprised it went that fast that soon, but hey your old CPU has risen quite a bit performance-wise.

I should underline the importance of stress testing; it's annoying when you play for half an hour and the computer suddenly reboots loosing all the unsaved info.

For that, use Orthos to heat up the CPU and RAM (blend option). After half an hour I would say it's stable enough to try to push it further. Still, for 24/7 operation it should be passing at least one or two hours of orthos stress testing.

Another advice, keep it under 60°C on load. If you have the intel stock cooler it's gonna be hard, but there's a catch. You can buy a good cooler (I recommend always the BigTyphoon VX test here) and reuse it in the future C2D or C2Quad whenever you will decide to upgrade. It's a good investment in my opinion.

Cheers!

It is normal that they increase, but they are not very CPU bound. Your VID card should score around 7000 on a C2D @3.5GHz, so keep this in the perspective.

Your CPU is a single core, even though the HyperThreating bs**t has convinced many buyers they are actually purchasing a dual core. With that in mind in my opinion it will be hard to surpass (by much) 5500 points.

However 5500 points in 3DM2006 with your card equals a smooth gameplay at 1600*1200 with 4xAA and 16xAF in most games.
