"system failed CPU test" vocal POST

Thread Starter
This issue is regarding my older system (see "AGP Battler" in my sig). Basically its a p4s800D-E Deluxe mobo with P4 Northy 3GHz. Whenever I power up, I can't get through POST and I get that message suggesting the CPU is toast. I've had an intermittent problem for the past 6 months or so with the computer not posting and then suddenly working after unplugging and the plugging in the main PSU power cable.

I have a feeling its the PSU because my problem is exactly the same as in this post. This problem started some time ago (after I added an AGP 7800GS that I had overclocked). I _think_ what happened is that my PSU (which has a 18A 12V rail) was getting strained and now is perhaps not supplying a good voltage to the processor (probably some components are damaged but not completely broken).

The reason I am placing this post is incase someone may have a different theory. Just to let you know, my CPU _never_ ran hot, due to my aero4 cooler and AS5. Any words of wisdom before I order a Seasonic 430W PSU?

BTW the PSU is one of those cheapo "ultra" 500W, but with a wimpy 12V. I bought it about 3.5 years ago.

Yes I think it is your PSU.

Even though my PSU is lower wattage it has rock solid dual 12V rails.

well, unfortunately my suspicion was not correct. Installed a brand new seasonic s12 430W PSU today (with 7800GS removed and 9800 pro installed) and still get the CPU failed POST message. At this point, I can only suspect that it is the CPU or MOBO. So I'm probably going to buy a 2.8GHz northy from the egg ($72 shipped). Looks like they dont sell the 3.0GHz versions anymore. The only upside here is that with the seasonic and 3 new SilenX fans, its now amazingly quiet.

EDIT : darn! the 2.8GHZ northy has a 533 FSB. Mine was an 800. Might opt for the 3GHz Prescott which has the 1MB L2 for $81 shipped. I've looked all over ebay and the 800FSB 3GHz Northy's are hard to find. I dont have enough rep to post in the WTB section :-(

Can you not RMA either the mobo or the processor?

My friend RMA'd his "because it was running too hot at 60c". Ebuyer didn't ask a question, just replaced it.

Its 3.5 years old and I think the warranty is 3 years. I ended up buying a prescott in ebay for quite cheap.

Wow - no luck again. Still get the same POST message. I pulled everything out of the board save for the new CPU and no go. At this point I can only assume its the motherboard. Now I need to decide if I'm going to replace the mobo or just build a whole new (cheap) system based on E4300 or AM2.
