E4300 temps?

Hi All,

Today I picked up some new hardware :

- LG L194WTX-BF 19IN Widescreen (two of these)
- Intel Core 2 Duo E4300
- OCZ Gold XTC PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800

Out of the box, idle CPU temp (as reported by SpeedFan and Asus Probe) is about 41 degrees (this is with Arctic Silver 5 and a Zalman 7700 AlCu). When I overclocked to 3.5 GHZ (didn't touch the vcore), idle temps jumped to about 45 degrees. The system ran and booted fine, but under Prime 95 the CPU temps went into the 60s.

I don't know much about overclocking, but I can assume that's a bit too hot...

I tried smaller overclocks (2.7ghz), and the results were pretty much the same (1-2 degrees difference). The only way I can get it to run under 60 degrees on full load (Prime 95) is at stock 1.8 ghz.

Any tips/suggestions?

Well, there could be a few things. First thing that enters my mind is perhaps the chip is just not a good stepping, and heats up a lot more than other steppings. But I don't know much about which allendales are good or bad.

Other thing is perhaps the HSF isn't making good contact with the IHS--maybe not enough AS5? Maybe one of the surfaces is horribly concave? What is the vcore you're running? Also, did you OC in steps, or just jump to 3.5? I think 3.5, while people have reported running 24/7, isn't an expected overclock speed on air cooling on any allendale--just some. Okay, perhaps that didn't help so much. I'd try re-seating the HSF. Also, keep in mind that the AS5 will have to cure before it gets to it's most efficient thermal conductivity (they say something like 200 hours of heat-ups and cool-downs).

What's your case cooling like? Maybe try running the comp. with the case side off to see if that helps?

EDIT--while you said that you didn't touch the vcore, it could be that you can actually notch down the vcore--I've heard of many people OC'ing C2D's on lower-than-stock voltages. Worth a shot, and will help to keep the temps down.

ANOTHER EDIT--you might want to use TAT by intel for reading the temps of your cores--it's supposed to report temps more accurately than coretemp, etc. but I don't know how far off they are.

Thanks for the tips!

I made sure to put on a good amount of AS5 - well spread out across the chip. I tightened the heatsink quite well too.

I didn't jump straight to 3.5, but I didn't go in small steps, either. I think I went something like this:
1.8 -> 2.7 -> 3 -> 3.5

My case cooling is decent: There is a 120mm fan on the back, blowing air out of the case. There is another 120mm fan on the side, blowing in air slightly to the side of the CPU (there wasn't enough space on the case to place the fan right above the CPU).

I just installed TAT - it shows 42-43 at idle. This is strange because it is now evening and considerably cooler than when I tested it earlier. I'll try it during the day again.

I'm going to try lowering the vCore a little... thanks for the tip!

When putting on AS5, many recommend only using a 1/2 of a rice grain size in the middle of the heat sink and let the contact of the CPU and heat sink spread the paste apart. AS5 takes a total of 200 hours to settle in. A settlement of daily cycles of on and off usage.

I have heard many rumors about the heat issues of the E4300. The reason is that the IHS is not made like the E6x00(s). It is more concave than the others, making it a lot harder for the heat sink to transfer the heat.

You should look into lapping only IF many other users on this forum recommends it.

1.18? Whoa!

I didn't touch my vcore, left it at 1.4x by default. Guess that could be the reason for such temps. I'll play around with it a bit more tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get a decent overclock with OK temps .

1.4x?! That's high! I can do 3.2Ghz with 1.28 vcore. You can probably do something lower than what I have with the same vcore. No idea.

good night ~

Yeah my temps are 38°C idle but I'm in a hot apartment, the only thing moving air is my Antec 900. So you should be around 34 or lower.

omg why am I still on here, I have to be at work at 7:30 =/
