Since I dont plan to be using it as much in the fall, should I just for get about the X-Fi and buy a nice stereo, or should I use my computer as my stereo? If so, should I keep the X-Fi and mod it, or would I be better off buying a new sound card?
If you were going to buy a new sound card, I would recommend that you go USB simply for the reasons you just mentioned. You'll want to be able to use it with both your Macbook and your desktop, as you'll most likely have music on both. Even if the Desktop was the main listening source, no reason the Macbook should get left out, right?

M-Audio makes some nice affordable units that don't have mic preamps or any of the other production-oriented features that you probably won't need.

EMu also has a nice USB unit. this one does a little more than you'll probably need, but would accomplish great sound output nonetheless.

well you have 2 options. you can use your main rig as your game station and file server in one. desktop hdds are much cheaper than external or lappy drives. just put your music there and connect your desktop to your stereo for tunes in your room. You can also share your music over the network if you would like (itunes for example) and then listen to your music wherever you are on campus on your macbook.

or you can get a USB DAC and headphone amp and go the portable route with your macbook.

Honestly, I would probably do both. get or build an Alien DAC and then get a portable amp. A pint class amp would go well, or a PIMETA although it would be slightly larger.
