is overclocking a x1950pro really needed? - Page 2

I've got my x1950 GT 256MB (GDDR3) AGP, which is the same card minus some some clock speed, up to 621MHz on the core, and 763MHz (1526MHz) on the memory. You could probably get 600+ on the core, and 1600+ on the memory. What are you using to overclock? Don't use Catalyst Control Center or whatever it's called, use ATITrayTool, or maybe ATITool. I use ATITray personally though. Oh yeah, stock speeds of my GT were only 500MHz core, 1200MHz memory.

You can never get it to XT performance. Maybe you could match the clocks, but that will mean squat, except it may look pretty. Those cards OC poorly so it's not worth it to OC. You can still do it just for the principal of the thing (you are on OCN anyways ), but it won't offer much in terms of performance increases.

The x1950pro just won't overclock much. Try it for yourself. At most you can only squeeze a few more mhz out of the clocks. They are infamous for their bad overclocks but at stock they are still very nice, so many owners of x1950pros tend to just leave it at their stock speeds.

core increases alone brought my ATITray frames per second from 630ish fps at stock core frequency, all the way to 830ish fps at 620MHz core, stock mem frequency. Memory overclocking only yields an extra 25ish fps for a total of 855ish fps, and that was overclocked from 600MHz (1200MHz) to 763MHz (1526MHz). Even a small 10MHz increase on the core yields nice numbers with my card. Just try it out.

In actual gaming those increases go un-noticed. It may not be worth it, considering the extra heat an instability the card may generate. I would OC just for the hell off it and principle of the thing.

Would you like me to show some screens of my games run with and without my overclock? I can't believe someone on overclock.net just said overclocking yields no improvement when gaming. Maybe I'll put my whole rig at stock and see what kinda perfomance I get in games. You think Prey would still be playable at 1600x1200 4xAA, 16xAF? I've even posted screens in another thread. But if I need to again it's no problem.
