Destroyed CPU - Page 2

I had the same thing happen to me one time with a stubburn heatsink, the crappy thermal stuff AMD uses stock pretty much welded the HSF to the CPU and when I tried to remove it, carefully, I still managed to pull my cpu (one in the sig) out with the HSF. I thought my poor Sempron was done for for sure, but I managed to straighten the pins out as they weren't badly bent just ever so slightly. Still working to this day, though now with some AS5. Also, I attempted to "twist" the HSF a little before removing it, but it felt as if all the pins on the CPU were on the verge of becoming badly bent or breaking, so I refreigned and hoped for the best.

I did the same thing man, took off the stock heatsink which had the stock paste still on it for the 18months since it was installed - that stuff was like glue. I went to take the heatsink off to apply silver compound and it tore the CPU out, bent half a dozen pins and snapped two clean off - killed the CPU

note to self... rotate heatsink back and forth before removal...

If the pins are still intact and only bent, theres a good chance if you take you time, straighten then as much as you can it will work..saving you the money...man that is unlucky tho. Just use the mechanical pen like ihatethedukes said, it should work.

Hehe!

Nice one dude, glad to see you got it working.

You do realise how extremely lucky you are right?

Step1 - CPU got ripped out fo socket

Step2 - Took a screwdriver to him!

And he still lives

nice man glad you saved it i saved my old northwood 3.4 by bendin the pins back with a knife and pen they were bad lol 1 entire side smashed down. It posts fine on a old 915 motherboard but that board only supports a 2.2 so it cant be used.

You guys saved me $59 (was going to order the OEM since I already have a 9500 zalman plus a stock HSF)

I did TRY to twist it and it wouldn't (I think AMD makes Thermal CONCRETe not paste!) and when I reinserted the cpu didn't notice the front wasn't all the way in and then clamped the zalman down on top of it

Wow i'm alot luckier then I thought!

My favorite tip for whenever you have to remove your CPU cooler (for cleaning, reseating, or putting a new chip in): Run any stress test for about fifteen minutes, just to heat that baby up, then shut the machine off, then proceed to remove the cooler. The idea is to "soften up" whatever TIM you've got on there. I guarantee you your CPU will never come off its socket despite the socket still being locked down.

Hope this helps!

my 3000+ was ripped out of a socket so many times, that after a 5th time, the cpu would not work. I checked and could not find bent pins or missing pins, but it still would not work.
