How do I dual boot XP and Vista? - Page 2

So, what if the user did something like this:

1 - HDD for XP and Vista
2 - HDD's for storage?

I list a total of 3 HDD's as they all might only be 150GB Raptors, and 150GB's can be used up fairly quickly...

What are peoples thoughts on having the 2 storage drives split between XP-related games/files and the other for Vista games/files?

Would it make a difference?

okay....maybe a mild "jacking"... but it is related.

Not getting you. You have 1 drive split in 2, with Vista and XP on it. Then you give XP and Vista their own harddrive for games and files?

That is fine if so.

Ya! That is what I meant.

Thanks

I suppose it doesn't matter what you put on the 2 storage drives, but for my own sanity and logic that is how I would split it up...

...hmmmm... that may change when I make the build, it is a question of trial and error.... and with my battered brain it is more "error"

Well considering you can't use XP and Vista at the same time. It may be worth partitioning one of those storage drives in 2. XP and Vista can have a partition each then the 3rd drive can be storage of personal files that can easily be used on both OS's.

Here is what I have done with my Dual Boot.

RaptorX with 3 partitions, One 40 gig with XP and one 40gig with Vista and the other partition dedicated for apps and the like.

In conjunction with that I also have my Raptor Array 2x74 divided up into 4 partitions with XP games on one, Vista games on the other and benching programs for each OS on the other 2 partitions.

Does that make any sense?

So... please give me your opinions on drive type and duties each type would be relegated to.

Drive types:
  • Raptor, 10K rpm, 150GB
  • SATA 7.2K rpm, 250+ GB

What drive would you put the O/S's on?

Is it possible to have a dual boot RAID 0?

What combination of drives would you recommend?
-All Raptors?
-Combination of single Raptor for O/S's, single SATA for storage?
-Combination of single SATA for O/S's, single Raptor for storage?

Objective is overal performance and stability.

Let's just "pretend" that money is not the issue....emphasis on "pretend"

Yes. Thank you.

How do these partitions appear on the GUI? As different logical drives with different drive ID's (ie. C: , D:, E: )?

...sorry... I am a "visual" learner... graphs, logic trees and pictures books (like, "see Spot...see Spot run" ...lol) help me grasp things better and longer.

C and H are XP and Vista partitions.
