why does the 8800 has weard amount of memory such as 387mb or 786mb rather then 512mb or 256mb?

I think it has to do with the G80 architecture.

512MB is for rendering and 256MB is for physics. (For the GTX)

I've heard that the 8800GTX is the only one with a physics accelerator, but I could be wrong.

probably cost of memory, and marketing reasons.

The 8800GTX has 768MB, which isn't an odd amount, since it's 3 x 256MB.

The 8800GTX has either 320MB or 640MB. These amounts are still in the 'normal' array, since they're multiples of 64MB.

Yeah, different than the 'usual' 256MB or 512MB, but still not unusual. Heck, it works... so why not

I think marketing had to do with it... esp. for the 8800GTS. If they would have just released a 512MB version, they probably priced it at around $325.... they would have missed out on the people who could not afford anything over $300. Now with the 320MB and 640MB versions, they cater to two different crowds: those in the sub-$300 range and those who can afford a little more (like me).

And then there are those that cannot afford a 6600gt


ANyways chozart is right. If they did say 1gb of memory that would currently be useless but 768mb is good for the games of today and towmorrow

I've heard its only the GTX, but i've also heard people saying that all 8 series have them. I havn't been able to find anything online about it.
