8800 series cards make use of a 384-bit interface. The interface between the GPU and memory dictates the optimal amount of memory that the card can support. As for physics support, part of the RAM is not dedicated to physics processing at the moment. There are no implementations in Nvidia's drivers at present to process Havok Engine3 code on the GPU yet, thus the whole amount of memory is used for graphics.

You wouldnt need a physx card anyway. Those things are pointless, and there are at most 3 games that can actually put the to good use.

I think it's a way of competing with ATI on just a slightly different level. Having a choice of 640MB looks better than a 512MB card, and the same with 320MB vs. 256MB. Besides the performance increase, I think it's a way of marketing as well. The 768MB is just awesome, lol j/k (it's what I have). - Chozart's explanation sheds a little light on that one.

Of course there are many better reasons for the added memory, concerning performance specs as stated in above posts, some people simply look at cards and say "This one is better because it has 128MB more memory". Kinda sad but true.

Yea, and on top of that those 3 games are coded to work only with physX cards. I'm not able to run Cell Factor with the bonus material even though i'm sure my cards can handle it.

I think GTS's are 320bit.

I believe they all have one.

GTS 320 has 256mb for GPU, 64mb for PPU
GTS 640 has 512mb for GPU, 128mb for PPU
GTX has 512mb for GPU, 256mb for PPU.


Could be wrong though, it seems a little bit odd that the GTS and GTX would have the same amount of GPU RAM, even though the GTX's core is faster.

I still have to see proof also how people come up with the idea that memory is allocated to PPU?

As I said earlier... I think it's marketing. If they'd just max out the memory controller, then there would be no 320MB version of the 8800GTS.
