754/939 backwards compatibility?

Thread Starter
it's been bugging me since i found out my old 3500+ was a 754 when i'd always thought it was a 939. not so odd really, except that when i had to RMA my 4000+ i used the 3500+ in my new 939 board with no problems...

since it didnt explode, and it worked fine it leads me to believe that there was backwards compatibility when every source i've checked so far made no mention of it, in fact mostly explicitly denying it.

so any ideas?

no

you mean you THINK you have a 754 in a 939mobo? No way
post #3 of 30
how did you find out as i still think it is a 939 as 754 and 939 have different pin layout and it is physicaly impossible to fit one into the other

Its physically impossible. Totally different pin layout.

lol wow quick replys

well yeah i read the pin layout was different, so it was certainly confusing for me.

the old motherboard was an HP OEM board made by ASUS, called the "salmon" i think, the HP model was a t770.uk if you want to check the HP site.

can't take pics now as i recently sold said mobo and said 3500+ to a mate, but i'll get snaps asap.

i haven't ever managed to cpu-z and see if the old cpu really was a 754, the reason i know it was however is that the words "socket 754" are moulded into the socket plastic...

unless hp had some special cross compatible socket for mass cpus, but i think you're wrong and its a 939 cpu, or the mb is 754

other words either a 754 cpu in a 754 mb or a 939 in a 939

i'm thinking if that's the case then the socket must have been misprinted.

there's NO WAY my current mobo and CPU are 754, so either:

a. the mobo somehow had "socket 754" moulded into the 939 socket plastic by mistake

b. i'm the first person to accidently shove a 754 into a 939 socket, and AMD lied to us about having to upgrade

Does the 3500 have a pin-less are in the center of the chip? I not then it probably is just a 939.
