Help! Am I Overheating?

post #1 of 8

Well basically i've just noticed this yesterday.... upon playing Red Orchestra (it's not really graphically intensive... runs off UT2004 engine) for around 2 - 3 hours .. straight I'd get a problem where my gun would disappear... pixels would start messing up all about the screen and the FPS would be like 2..... Well it started to happen again today after playing for a long while so i figured it might be overheating..

I opened up Nvidia control panel to discover this;

I had to download nTune first in order to see my temperature which by this time was only 57'c ...so i'm starting to think it might just be well... eugh, not sure

It seems to be like that on every screen in the panel... should i run that stability test above?

Starting to not think its an overheat.... i'm playing Everquest 2 maxed with only 67'c on GPU.... I hope i don't have to RMA another damn card in under 5 months time... Eugh

Well play the game for about an hour while keeping nTune up. Immediately alt-tab out and see what the temp is reading.

57C idle is fine for a 8800.

Its safe up to 80C but can even go up to 90C without problems.

Uninstall your drivers, download driver cleaner, run it, then restart, then install the newest drivers from nvidia, then restart again.

Agreed, you may need better cooling, water or more air cooling fans.

Heres my checkup

I left the computer idol for about 15 minutes (making this post, checking the 57'C temp) then i go into the game... after 6 minutes i get out of nowhere down to 2fps, my gun and some stuff infront of me disappears.... a black box starts flashing in the side of the screen and my hud flickers too... i ALT tab out to close the process and all the stuff on my desktop is in 800x600 with all the colors practically inverted!!! i then press to close the process... the computer screen just stops showing anything and the monitor went blank.... and i had to reboot

I think it had a few twisted artifact things but i've never seen them before on this card until that specific point in that specific game... it was mostly the gameworld disappearing and stuff flickering (and that giant pixelated black box ?!!!)

Reinstall the drivers, if that doesn't work, RMA. The card is dying, whether thats due to heat (highly doubt it unless your temperature reads are inaccurate) or some other problem, its dying fast and almost beyond the point of RMA.

If you're overclocked at all, downclock it to see if it stabilizes. If it does, then good, if you have to underclock it a lot to get it to stabilize, thats bad, because the chip is still dying.

I've been playing Everquest 2 for the last 4 hours and have had no problems at all... cards at 72C.... is it possible that RO is conflicting with my graphics in a 'very' bad way?
