How much of a temperature difference can be gained with a lapped HS vs a non-lapped?

depends. i have seen up to 8-10C. usually around 5C though.

and @ the original poster; the zalman 9700 comes with a factory mirror finish, right? or am i wrong. i think you only have to lap the cpu cause zalman makes their heatsinks nice. i could be wrong though

Yea it did, But there are the old paste that was on it and was used at the time I got it from a friend. So I'm mirroring it again and the CPU that I'm plaining on getting will have the same thing and it is actually the Zalman CNPS9500AT

You don't need it shiny, you need it flat. make sure the sandpaper is on a flat surface. Don't polish it with compounds or any other method....only sand it.

Also, it's fine to lap a C2D...it can't crack the core...the core is covered by a thick chunk of metal which is the IHS. You'll be fine. All you have to worry about is bending pins...which is pretty easy to do..

Thanks every one for the help.... I know I'm a n00b with this and I want to make sure I don't fry anything or destroy anything for that matter...

Ps: What is C2D? Man I feel dumb...
