They are both rated very highly on Newegg, and this is most likely the cheapest place to get them (you may want to search a little to make sure). Both are going to give you about the same performance as well, and you should be able to max out most of your games at 1024x768. At least for the time being.
I agree. The 1950pro will perform much better than the 7900gs - I say the 1950 unless you want to stick with nVidia for some reason.

And personally, I just can't get over the low 128-bit memory interface of the 8600GTS. I just don't understand why they'd implement such low bandwidth for the memory. It can't be that much more expensive to produce 256-bit memory, can it?

Funny thing is that if you look at benchies and esp. gaming performance, that doesn't hinder the card that much

It seems that with the newer architecture, the memoty interface doesn't matter that much.
